Andrew & Peter; James & John

Matthew 4:18-22; Luke 5:1-11

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. Our true story also comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”

We begin with two fishermen named Peter and Andrew. Peter and Andrew were fishermen. They would use a big net when they went fishing.

Let’s pretend to throw out your own net just like a fisherman. Ready? Set? THROW! Once your net is in the water, you have to be really still and quiet. And wait for the fish.

WHOA! Look at all those fish. Time to pull up your net. Ready? Set? Pull! You went fishing, just like the fishermen did.

So, Peter and Andrew were fishermen, and they fished every day.

One day, Jesus walked by. They knew who Jesus was. They knew He was special and an amazing teacher. Jesus looked at them and said, “Come follow me.”

Wow! Jesus, God’s Son, wanted to be friends with the fishermen! He wanted them to follow Him. Andrew and Peter were SO excited that they left their nets and started following Jesus right then and there!

Later, Jesus saw two MORE fishermen named James and John. James and John were in a boat fishing with their dad when Jesus saw them. He said, “Come follow me!” Do you think they left their nets behind to follow Jesus?

Yes! Jesus wanted to be friends with them, too! They were SO happy that they got out of their boat and followed Jesus. Those four fishermen, Peter, Andrew, James, and John followed Jesus and became some of His really good friends called the disciples!

And do you know what the best part is? Jesus wants to be friends with YOU, too. Jesus wants to be friends with everyone. Who can be friends with Jesus? Everyone can be friends with Jesus!

Bible Paraphrase: “Come and follow me, Jesus said. Matthew 4:19, NIrV

Text Truth: Jesus says, “Follow me.”

Family Devotional

Do everything in love.  —1 Corinthians 16:14

Our Bible story, today, was about how we can love like Jesus. And the best way to love like Jesus is to do EVERYTHING in love! That’s why we learned this Bible verse.

Do everything in love.  —1 Corinthians 16:14, NIV

We have been talking about loving like Jesus. So, with your family, make a list of things you can do to love like Jesus.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, we want to do everything in love, just like Jesus. Please help us love everyone, everywhere, and do things like (read the list your family made). We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
