Feeding 5000

Mark 6:31-44

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Mark. Mark loved Jesus and told people about Him.

We begin on a beach. Jesus and His friends had been working really hard, and they were tired. So, they sailed away, to another part of the lake. Jesus and His friends had planned to rest, but when they got to land, a HUGE crowd of people was there.

There were more than five thousand people, and they ALL wanted to see Jesus and hear Him teach. Do you think Jesus taught the people? Of course! Because Jesus is a good friend to everyone. Jesus taught for a long time, and everyone got hungry. That’s a lot of growling tummies!

Jesus’ friends, the disciples, told Jesus to send the people away so they could eat. But Jesus said to the disciples, “You feed them.”

The disciples didn’t know how to feed everyone! There were SO many people. So, Jesus told the disciples to go see how much food they could find.

When the disciples came back, they had only one small lunch.

Do you know what was in that lunch? Only five small loaves of bread. Can you count to five with me? One, two, three, four, five! Along with those five loaves, there were two fish. Can you count to two with me? One, two. They had five small loaves of bread and two fish. Is that enough to feed five thousand people? Does one small lunch seem like enough to feed thousands of people?

Jesus told the disciples to have the people sit down.

Jesus took the food and prayed. He thanked God for the food they had.

Then, Jesus told the disciples to pass out the food to everyone. So, they did.

And do you know what happened? Everyone got food. The people ate, and no one was hungry! That’s amazing. Jesus fed everyone with just five loaves and two fish. Jesus made sure EVERYONE had food. Jesus was a good friend to everyone. And everyone can be friends with Jesus.

Bible Paraphrase: “Come and follow me, Jesus said. Matthew 4:19, NIrV

Text Truth: Jesus is a good friend to everyone.

Family Devotional

Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand.
— Mark 6:41-44

Our Bible story was about something else Jesus did that only He can do. What did Jesus do in our story that only He can do? Jesus fed over 5,000 people with only two fish and five loaves of bread. And there were leftovers too! Jesus really can do anything because Jesus is God’s Son. And with God all things are possible.

“Come and follow me, Jesus saidMatthew 4:19, NIrV

With God all things are possible. And since Jesus is God’s Son, that means Jesus can do anything! That's how Jesus fed over 5,000 people with only two fish and five loves of bread.

With your family, make a list of our favorite foods. The people in our story ate fish and bread. But what do YOU like to eat?

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God for all the yummy food God gives to you and your family to eat. Thank God for (read the list your family made). Ask God to help you remember when you eat food, that Jesus fed all of those people with just a little fish and bread because Jesus can do anything! Thank God for His love. Acknowledge to God your love for Him.
