Land, Plants, Sea & Sun, Moon, Stars

Genesis 1:9-19

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Genesis. The word genesis means “the beginning.”

We are talking about all the WONDERFUL things God made! We know that God made the WHOLE world and everything in it. Everything. In the whole wide world. We can read about all God made in the Bible! And remember, if it’s in the Bible, it is true.

On day one . . . God made the light and dark.

And on day two . . . God made the sky above the water.

But was God done yet? Nooo! On day three . . . God made land. And God gathered the waters together and called them “seas.” Then, God created things to start growing on the land.

God made plants to grow on the land. He said, “Let the land grow plants. Let each plant make its own seeds.” That is what happened. There were plants.

God created fruit trees . . .

. . . and grass and flowers.

God saw what He had made and God said, “That’s good!”

But God wasn’t done! On day four, God made a light for the day and a light for the night. Hmmm, what light shines in the sky during the day? Do you know? It sounds like the word, fun! Yes, the sun! The sun shines in the sky during the day. You’ve got it! God made the sun to brighten up our days, help plants grow, and keep us warm.

And He made a light for the night. What glows in the sky at night? It sounds like the word, spoon. Yes, the moon! The moon comes out at night. And God added lots and lots of little lights in the night sky. What are those called? It sounds like the word, cars. Stars! Yes! God filled the night sky with stars. On day four, God made the sun, moon, and stars! God saw what He had made and God said, “That’s good!”

Now, let’s remember everything God made! Count off the days with me. On day one . . . God made light and dark. On day two . . . God made sky over water. On day three . . . God made land, plants, and sea. On day four . . . God made the sun . . . and the moon and stars. Great job! God made ALL those things. God made EVERYTHING.

Family Devotional

And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
– Genesis 1:14-19

Our Bible story was about how God made the land, plants, and seas on day three, then He made the sun, moon, and stars on day four. That’s A LOT! Only God can make everything! Right? Right!

God saw everything he had made. And it was very good. —Genesis 1:31, NIrV

With your family, make a list of your favorite things that grow in the ground. It can be a tree, like an apple tree. It can be a flower, like a sunflower. It can be a vegetable, like a carrot. It can be any kind of tree, plant, or flower—it can even be a berry bush! God made all kinds of trees and plants and flowers!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank you for making the ground for things to grow in. Thank you for making the sun to help them grow. Some of our favorite things that grow in the ground are (read the list your family made). You are amazing, God, and we love you very much. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
