Jesus and the Little Children

Mark 10:13-16

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Mark. Mark loved Jesus and told people about Him.

We are going to learn about gentleness. Do you know what GENTLENESS is? GENTLENESS is being soft and kind with our words and actions, so we don’t hurt people. Our true story begins with Jesus teaching a lot of people. It was VERY exciting!

Everyone wanted to talk to Jesus. And listen to Jesus. And get as close as they could to Jesus.

Lots of parents even brought their children to see Jesus! They wanted their children to be so close that Jesus could touch them.

But as the little children went up to see Jesus, some of Jesus’ friends told the little children to . . . go away! Oh, no! That’s not GENTLENESS!

When Jesus heard that, Jesus chose GENTLENESS and told the disciples, “Let the little children come to me.”

Jesus let the children come right up to Him. Jesus probably hugged them and was kind to them and talked to them and listened to them. Are all of those things GENTLE? Yes!

And Jesus wants to help us be GENTLE, too! Like when we’re with a new baby, we need to choose GENTLENESS with our hands and feet.

Or when your friends are playing a game that you don’t want to play, instead of shouting angry words, you can use choose GENTLENESS and say kind, soft words to ask them to play something else.

We use GENTLE hands so we don’t hurt a baby, and we use GENTLE words so we don’t hurt our friends’ feelings.

Jesus can help us choose GENTLENESS because Jesus can help us do everything! Who can help you do everything?

Bible Verse: Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” John 14:6, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus can help me choose gentleness.

Family Devotional

And they were bringing children to him that he might touch them, and the disciples rebuked them. But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.” And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them. —Mark 10:13-16

In our Bible story, Jesus chose gentleness with the children. Jesus can help us choose gentleness, too, because Jesus can help us do everything.

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” —John 14:6, NIV

With your family, find a picture of Jesus and glue it onto a piece of paper. Or ask one or more of your family members to help in drawing a picture of Jesus. Then, have each family member write their name around the picture of Jesus.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for giving [family member’s name] Jesus to be [his/her] friend forever. Thank You for giving [family member’s name] Jesus to be [his/her] friend forever. (Continue with each family member.) Jesus is gentle and wants all the little children to come to Him. I pray that (name each family member) will all choose to follow Jesus and be His friend forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
