The Good Samaritan

Luke 10:25-37

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”

Jesus sometimes taught people using special teaching stories called parables.

Jesus told a story about a man who chose KINDNESS. But His story begins with another man. This man was walking down a road one day, on his way to the city of Jericho.

While the man was walking, some men jumped on him, hurt him badly, and took his money! The poor man had so many boo-boos. He really needed help. Before long, someone came walking by.
e needed help.

But the person did not stop to help. Oh, no! He just walked right by the hurt man. That is not kindness.

Then another man came walking along. Oh, no! That person did not stop to help, either. He just walked right by the hurt man. That is not kindness.

Then a third man came by. This man was a Samaritan. Now, I really don’t think this man will stop and help because the Samaritan people and the hurt man’s people are not friends. Oh, wow! The Samaritan DID stop and help the hurt man! He chose KINDNESS and put bandages all over the hurt man’s boo-boos.

Then he chose KINDNESS and put the hurt man on his donkey.

Then he chose KINDNESS and took the hurt man to a place to stay until he was all better! Wow! The Samaritan man was so KIND!

And guess what! Jesus can help us choose KINDNESS, too! When someone is hurt, we can choose KINDNESS and help them. When someone is sad, we can choose KINDNESS and give them a hug or cheer them up with KIND words. Jesus will help us choose KINDNESS because Jesus can help us do everything.

Bible Verse: Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” John 14:6, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus can help me choose kindness.

Family Devotional

“But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’”
—Luke 10:33-35

In our Bible story, a Samaritan man chose kindness by helping a hurt man. When Jesus is our friend forever, He can help us choose kindness, too, because Jesus can help us do everything!

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” —John 14:6, NIV

With your family, make a list of ways you can choose kindness. Write each family member's name next to the thing they choose. Kindness can be giving a hug, smiling, sharing, or saying kind words. The Samaritan helped someone as a way of choosing kindness. So, what can you do to choose kindness?

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to be our friend forever and help us choose kindness. Please help [family member’s name] choose kindness and (read what they listed). Please help [family member’s name] choose kindness and . . . (continue with each family member). We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
