Abraham and Sarah Are Happy

Genesis 21:1-8

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Genesis. The word genesis means “the beginning.”

We begin with a man named Abraham and a woman named Sarah.

Abraham and Sarah had been married for a very, very, very long time.

Abraham and Sarah were not sad. Abraham and Sarah were not afraid. Abraham and Sarah were not frustrated. Abraham and Sarah were . . . HAPPY!

Do you know why Abraham and Sarah were so happy? Because God gave them a . . .

Can you guess what God gave them? Is it a frog? No? Is it a giraffe? No? Is it a bunny rabbit? No?

It’s a baby! God gave Abraham and Sarah a baby.

And they were SUPER happy because they had waited a really, really, really long time for this special day. As I said, Abraham and Sarah waited a long, long, LONG time to have a baby. And now their baby son was here! Sarah was so happy that it brought her laughter! Sarah was so happy and thankful. She praised God for giving her a son!

Later, when their baby was older, Abraham and Sarah had a great big party! Abraham and Sarah invited their friends and family and had lots of food to eat. It was a very happy time!

Do you think God loved Abraham and Sarah when they were happy? Of course, God loved them when they were happy! God loved Abraham and Sarah when they were happy because God loved them no matter what. Do you ever feel happy? Me, too! Show me your happy faces.

We can feel happy when the warm sun is shining. We can feel happy when we get to play with a friend. We can feel happy when we open a special gift. We can talk to God about feeling happy because we can always talk to God about anything.

God loves you when you’re happy. God loves you when you’re sad. God loves you when you’re afraid. God loves you when you’re frustrated. God loves you no matter what!

Bible Verse: Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Proverbs 3:5, NIV

Text Truth: God loves me when I’m happy.

Family Devotional

Sarah said, “God has brought me laughter, and everyone who hears about this will laugh with me.” And she added, “Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.” —Genesis 21:6-7

In our Bible story, Abraham and Sarah were very happy because they finally had a baby! God loved Abraham and Sarah when they were happy because God loved them no matter what.

Do you think God loves YOU no matter what? YES! God does love you no matter what! God loves you when you’re sad. God loves you when you’re afraid. God loves you when you’re frustrated. God loves you when you’re happy. God ALWAYS loves you!

Trust in the Lord with all your heart. —Proverbs 3:5, NIV

Abraham and Sarah felt very happy in our Bible story. So, with your family, make a list of things that make you feel happy. When I say your name, tell me one thing that makes you feel happy. Write down each family member’s name next to the thing that makes them feel happy.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, today we want to thank You for some of the things that make us feel happy. Thank You that [family member’s name] feels happy when (read what they listed), and [family member’s name] feels happy when (read what they listed). And thank You that . . . (continue naming each family member and what they listed). Thank You for always loving us and that we can talk to You about everything. You’re the best, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
