Hannah Is Sad

1 Samuel 1:2-20

Our story comes from the Bible. It is found in the part of the Bible called 1 Samuel (we say "First Samuel"). It is the first of two books in the Bible named after Samuel.

We begin with a woman named Hannah. Hannah was sad because she wanted to have a baby. Babies are wonderful! But Hannah couldn’t have a baby. And that’s why she was sad.

Have you ever really wanted something that you couldn’t have? Sometimes, we don’t get what we want, and we feel sad, too.

Maybe you want to ride the swings, but they’re all full.

Maybe you want a cookie, but you can’t have one right now.

Maybe you really, really want to see a friend, but you can’t go see them.

Or maybe, someone you love is very sick, and they’re not getting better.

In our story, Hannah was sad all day. And then she was sad all night. She was so sad that she even cried.

Hannah knew she could always talk to God, so she prayed and talked to God about feeling sad. Hannah trusted God with all her heart because she knew God loved her. And after Hannah talked to God, she felt much better! Her face didn’t look sad anymore!

Do you ever feel sad? Me, too. Everyone feels sad sometimes. And it’s okay to feel sad. When we feel sad, we can do what Hannah did. We can ALWAYS talk to God because God loves us no matter what.

Bible Verse: Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Proverbs 3:5, NIV

Text Truth: God loves me when I’m sad.

Family Devotional

In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.” —1 Samuel 1:10-11

In our Bible story, we learned that we can always talk to God about how we feel, just like Hannah did. Hannah talked to God about feeling sad, then she felt better. Do you remember why Hannah talked to God about feeling sad? Because God loved Hannah no matter what. And God loves you no matter what, too.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart. —Proverbs 3:5, NIV

Not having a baby made Hannah feel sad. So, with your family, make a list of things that make you feel sad. Have each family member write down one thing that makes them feel sad.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, sometimes we feel sad. [Family member’s name] feels sad when (read what they listed), and [family member’s name] feels sad when (read what they listed then continue with each family member.) Please help us remember that when we feel sad, we can always talk to You about it and you will love us no matter what. You’re the best, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
