Nehemiah Repairs a Wall

Nehemiah 1–3

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Nehemiah (pronounced “nee-ah-MY-ah”). The name Nehemiah means “God comforts.”

We begin with a city wall. A very, very BIG wall that went ALL the way around the city of Jerusalem. The wall was built to keep people safe. But eventually, there were so many holes in the wall that it did NOT keep the people safe anymore.

The wall needed to be fixed. When a man named Nehemiah heard about the wall with holes in it.

Hearing about the broken wall made Nehemiah very sad. He wanted to do something about the broken wall.

So, Nehemiah prayed to God and decided to fix it! But he was just one person, and the wall was really, really big! Do you think Nehemiah could fix it all by himself? No! Nehemiah needed help.

Well, guess what? LOTS of people came to help fix the wall! God is good! All of the people who came to help worked on different parts of the wall. Some people worked on a gate. Some people worked on a tower. Some people worked on one side of the wall. And some people worked on another side of the wall. So many people came to help.

The people all worked together until one day, the wall was finished! Everybody, celebrate! Hooray! God is good!

God gave Nehemiah people to help him. God gives us people to help us, too! Have you ever tried to put a puzzle together by yourself? It’s better when someone helps us put the puzzle together!

Or have you ever had to clean up the whole room? When one person cleans up the blocks and someone else cleans up the crayons and someone else cleans up the cards, then the job gets done quicker.

When we look around and see people helping, we can say, God is good.

Bible Paraphrase: Give thanks to the Lord for he is good. — Psalm 107:1, NIV

Text Truth: I can thank God for people who help me.

Family Devotional

Then I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.” I also told them about the gracious hand of my God on me and what the king had said to me.

They replied, “Let us start rebuilding.” So they began this good work.
—Nehemiah 2:17-18

In our Bible story, we learned about someone who needed help. He needed help repairing a broken wall. Do you remember his name? Yes, his name was Nehemiah. Nehemiah wanted to repair the broken wall that went around his hometown, but it was too BIG of a job for just one person. It’s a good thing so many people came to help Nehemiah! Wow! God is good!

Give thanks to the LORD for he is good. —Psalm 107:1, NIV

With your family, make a list of people who help you. It can be anyone who helps you—a brother or sister, a doctor, a teacher, your grandparent, a friend, anyone! You can you your list when you pray. So, write down the name of each family member next to the people they say.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, Thank You for giving us people to help us. Thank You for the way [name listed] helps [family member’s name]. Thank You for the way [name listed] helps [family member’s name]. (Continue with family member.). You are so good, God, and we love You very much. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
