Jesus Teaches at the Temple

Luke 2:41-50

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”

Our true story is about someone AMAZING. His name is Jesus! Have you ever heard of Jesus? We just celebrated His birthday at Christmas, but in this story, Jesus was twelve years old.


Can you count to twelve with me? Ready? GO! One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve! Good counting!


Jesus was twelve years old when He traveled with Mary and Joseph to a big celebration in the city of Jerusalem. 


It was so much fun! When the celebration was over, everyone went back home. But Jesus stayed in Jerusalem. 


I wonder where Jesus was. If I was a twelve-year-old kid, I might be by the animals. 

Let’s make some animal sounds. Can you say ‘baaa’ like a sheep? What about chickens? Maybe Jesus was chasing chickens? Can you cluck like a chicken? 


That was fun! But Jesus wasn’t by the animals. Maybe Jesus was hungry. If I was twelve, I’d definitely be near the snacks! Let’s pretend to eat our favorite snacks.


Mmmm, that was yummy! But Jesus wasn’t near the snacks either. So, if Jesus wasn’t with the animals, and He wasn’t near the snacks, where do you think Jesus was? Jesus was sitting with a group of grown-ups. 


And all of those grown-ups were listening to someone. Can you guess who it was? They were listening to Jesus! Jesus was teaching the grown-ups, and it was amazing!


Yes! The grown-ups were so amazed because Jesus was so wise and His answers were wise! No other twelve-year-old was like Jesus. Jesus was amazing! 


But guess what? Mary and Joseph didn’t know that Jesus stayed to teach. They were on their way home and suddenly realized that Jesus wasn’t with them! So, they went right back to the city to look for Him. They looked and looked and looked everywhere until they finally found him. 


When Mary and Joseph saw Jesus teaching grown-ups, they were amazed! Jesus was only twelve years old, but He was so wise and knew so much about God. Jesus is God’s Son, and Jesus is AMAZING.

Family Devotional

After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his understanding and his answers.
—Luke 2:46-47

In our Bible story, we heard how everyone who heard Jesus was amazed by what He said. At only twelve years old, Jesus knew so much about God! Who is amazing? Jesus is amazing!

Everyone who heard him was amazed.  —Luke 2:47, NIV

With your family, make a list of things you think are amazing. It can be anything that makes you say, “WOW!” Maybe it’s watching an airplane fly or someone run super fast. Whatever you think is amazing, write it down and also write the name of the family member that thought of that thing. 

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, You made such an amazing world full of amazing things. Thank You for amazing things like (read the list your family made). But more than anything, thank You for sending Jesus, who is the MOST amazing, to be our friend forever. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
