Calming the Storm

Matthew 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Mark. Mark loved Jesus and told people about Him. Our true story also comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word "Gospel" means "good news!"

Our true story is about someone who did something amazing! Can you guess who? It was Jesus! Jesus was traveling with His disciples. A disciple is a student. Jesus was their teacher. Jesus was also their friend.

While Jesus and His disciples were out in a boat, Jesus became tired. And so, Jesus went to sleep.

But Jesus wasn't going to sleep for long because all of the sudden, it started to rain. Then it rained harder. And harder! And harder! And it was so windy!

Then the waves got bigger and bigger! And the boat rocked back and forth!

The gusty winds and the heavy rains made Jesus’ friends afraid. So, they woke up Jesus.

And this is what Jesus did. He held out his arms, and Jesus said two words—just two—to the big storm. Do you know what Jesus said? Jesus said, “BE STILL.”

And the storm . . . stopped. The wind and the waves and all that rain . . . stopped. That’s AMAZING!

And Jesus’ friends were amazed, too. Jesus is SO amazing, and He is SO powerful that He can stop a storm! Only Jesus can do that. He is totally amazing.

Bible Paraphrase: Everyone who heard him was amazed. —Luke 2:47, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus' power is amazing.

Family Devotional

Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!”
—Matthew 8:23-25

In our Bible story, we heard about something amazing that Jesus did. Do you remember what Jesus did? Yes! Jesus stopped a storm while He and His disciples were in a boat! Only Jesus has the power to stop storms. Jesus is amazing!

Everyone who heard him was amazed.  —Luke 2:47, NIV

The disciples were afraid because the winds were rocking the boat and the heavy rains were falling on them. So, with your family, make a list of things that make you afraid. Have each member of your family write down one things that makes them afraid. And remember write the name of each family member next to the thing they say.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, we believe that Jesus’ power is amazing. Help (say each family member’s name) remember to go to Jesus when they are afraid of things like . . . (read the list your family made). We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
