Water to Wine

John 2:1-11

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus. And the word "Gospel" means "good news!"

Our true story is about someone who did something amazing. We begin with a wedding. It was quite the party! There was a bride and groom!


And guess who was invited to this wedding? Jesus, His mom Mary, and his friends, the disciples. They were all there to celebrate and have a good time. The party had special food, and they were drinking super fancy party drinks.


But as they were celebrating . . . they realized something. Uh-oh, the drink jar is EMPTY! The family having the wedding party ran out of the special drink. This was a big problem! And Mary wanted to help.


Mary knew that Jesus could do amazing things, so she asked Jesus for His help. She told the helpers to do whatever Jesus told them to do.


Jesus asked the helpers to get six big jars. Count to six with me. One, two, three, four, five, six. Great job!


Then Jesus said to fill the jars with water. Water? But the wedding needs super fancy party drinks. Oh, do you think Jesus is about to do something AMAZING with that water?


So, the helpers filled the six jars with water. Then Jesus said to take some of the drink out of the jars.


But when the helpers poured the drink out, it wasn’t water anymore. It was the super fancy party drink! Jesus did it! Jesus changed water into super fancy party drink! Jesus is amazing. And everyone who saw what Jesus did was amazed.

Family Devotional

What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. — John 2:11

In our Bible story, we heard about something amazing that Jesus did at a wedding. Jesus turned water into a super-fancy party drink! Jesus can do amazing things because Jesus is amazing!

Everyone who heard him was amazed.  —Luke 2:47, NIV

With your family, make a list of amazing things Jesus has done. It can be anything we’ve heard from other Bible stories about Jesus. Here are some of His amazing things: Jesus fed over 5000 people with just a few fish and loaves of bread. Jesus healed lots and lots of people. Jesus walked on water. Jesus died and came back like He said He would. Jesus even stopped a storm! Look at all these amazing things Jesus has done! Jesus really is amazing!  Have each family member write down their amazing thing, and write their name next to their amazing thing.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, Thank You for loving us so much that You sent Jesus to be our AMAZING friend forever. Jesus really is amazing! Only Jesus can do amazing things like (read the list your family made). You are awesome, God, and we love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”

Genesis 26:12-25 Take-Home Our story comes from the book, or part, of the Bible called Genesis. Genesis means "the beginning." The Bible tells us about a man named Isaac. God gave Isaac lots of land. God blessed Isaac by helping him have many animals and servants. When the animals needed water to drink, Isaac and his helpers took them to a well.
