Jesus Helps

John 6:1-13

Our true story is found in a part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus. And the word “Gospel” means “good news!”

Our true story is about one way Jesus showed love to the people around Him. It starts with Jesus and His friends, the disciples.

There was a crowd of people coming to see Jesus.

There were over 5,000 people! Jesus loved them all. Jesus knew they would be hungry and wanted to help them. So, Jesus asked one of His friends, “Where can we buy bread for all these people?”

Bread for more than 5,000 people? Think about how much bread that would be. A LOT! And then you’d have to PAY for all that bread.

There was a boy in the crowd who offered to share his lunch.

The boy brought five loaves of bread. Can you count to five with me? One, two, three, four, five! The boy brought five loaves of bread. And the boy had two fish. Can you count to two with me? One, two! The boy had five loaves of bread and two fish. Now is that enough to feed more than 5,000 people? No! That’s not enough food for more than 5,000 people. But listen to what Jesus did.

Jesus took the boy’s lunch and thanked God for the food.

Jesus said everyone could have as much food as they wanted, and everyone got enough food. Wow! Jesus fed more than 5,000 people with five loaves of bread and two fish. But wait, there’s more!

After everyone ate, Jesus said, “If there’s any food left over, put it in the baskets and bring it up here.” And there were TWELVE baskets of food left over. WOW! Jesus is amazing. Jesus helped a lot of people that day by feeding them.

You can love like Jesus, too, by helping. You can help set the table.

You can give a snack to someone who is hungry.

You can give a hug when someone is sad.

There are so many ways you can help others. And when you help someone, you love like Jesus!

Bible Paraphrase: A friend loves at all times. —Proverbs 17:17, NIV

Text Truth: I can share like Jesus.

Family Devotional

Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.

When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.
—John 6:10-13

In our Bible story, Jesus helped A LOT of people have food because He loved them. We can love like Jesus when we help people. And when we love like Jesus, we are a good friend.

A friend loves at all times. —Proverbs 17:17, NIV

With your family, make a list of things you can do to help your family. Helping your family is loving like Jesus! Have each member of your family write down one way they can help your family. And be sure to print the name of each family member next to the “way” they wrote.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to show us how to love. Please help us help our family and do things like . . . (read the list your family made). We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
