Breakfast on the Beach

John 21:1-14

Our true story is found in a part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus. And the word "Gospel" means "good news!"

Do you remember what happened in the Easter story? Jesus died. And when Jesus died, Jesus’ friends were very, very sad. But then three days later—count to three with me . . . one, two, three . . .

Jesus came back! Yes! Jesus came back because Jesus is alive! How do you think Jesus’ friends felt when He came back? Were they happy or sad? YES! Happy! Jesus is alive! And that is the Easter story.

Well, this story happened not long after the Easter story.

One day, Jesus went to see His friends while they were fishing. Jesus wanted to spend time with His friends so they could see that Jesus is alive and He wants to be their friend forever.

When Jesus’ friend, Peter, saw Jesus, he got so excited that he jumped in the water—SPLASH!

Peter swam right to Jesus as fast as he could! Guess what Jesus was doing when Peter got to Him? Jesus was making breakfast for His friends!

Peter and Jesus’ other friends sat and ate breakfast together. They were all so happy to be with Jesus again. They knew Jesus loved them, and now Jesus would be their friend forever and ever!

And the best part is that Jesus loves YOU and He wants to be YOUR friend forever, too! It’s true! Jesus wants to be your friend forever!

Bible Paraphrase: “I am alive for ever and ever!” —Revelation 1:18, NIV

Text Truth: Jesus is alive, and He wants to be our friend forever.

Family Devotional

Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
—John 21:12-14

In our Bible story, Jesus made breakfast for His friends, the disciples. Jesus wanted His friends to see that Jesus is alive and will be their friend forever. And the best part is that Jesus wants to be YOUR friend forever, too! Yay! Jesus is alive, and He wants to be our friend forever!

“I am alive for ever and ever!” —Revelation 1:18, NIV

Jesus is alive, and He wants to be our friend forever! To celebrate, do this with your family. Take a sheet of paper and write, “Jesus wants to be our friend forever” at the top of the sheet. Then, have each family member say their name. And as they do, write their name on the sheet of paper. If you have smiley face stickers, put a sticker after each name. If you do not have stickers, draw a smiley face after each name.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for giving us Jesus to be our friend for ever and ever. I pray that each person here will choose to follow Jesus and be His friend. We love You, God! In Jesus’ name, amen.”
