Rebekah Helps

Genesis 24:15-20

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Genesis. The word genesis means “the beginning.”

Our true story starts with a well! A well is a deep hole in the ground where people can go get water. When we want water, we go to the sink and turn on the faucet! But back in Bible times, people had to walk all the way to the well, lower a bucket into the well, fill it with water, and pull the heavy bucket back up.

That’s what a girl named Rebekah did. One evening, Rebekah went to a well for water. When she got there, she saw a man at the well with ten camels.

The man asked Rebekah if she would share her water with him. Rebekah was happy to help.

This is the sign for “help.” Make the ASL sign for help. With your dominant hand, make a fist with your thumb up. Place that fist on the palm of your other hand and raise both hands together.

And so, Rebekah drew out some water from the well and gave the man some to drink. But that’s not all Rebekah did. She looked for other ways to help.

Rebekah saw that the man had ten camels, and they needed water, too. So she got water for the camels—all ten of them!

Wow! Rebekah looked for ways to help. She helped the man and even his camels, too. Hooray for helping!

God made all of us to look for ways to help, too. Hmmm. Where can we look for ways to help? We can look for ways to help at the park!

We can look for ways to help at school!

We can look for ways to help at home! We can look for ways to help everywhere.

Rebekah looked for ways to help, and we can, too! God made you and me to help others. Hooray for helping! Who made you to help others? God made me to help others!

Bible Verse: We have the Lord our God to help us.  2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

Text Truth: God made me to look for ways to help.

Family Devotional

The servant hurried to meet her and said, “Please give me a little water from your jar.”

“Drink, my lord,” she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.

After she had given him a drink, she said, “I’ll draw water for your camels too, until they have had enough to drink.” So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels. —Genesis 24:17-20

In our Bible story, Rebekah looked for ways to help, and she found them! And guess what? When we look for ways to help, we will find them, too! Because God made you and me to help others! Who made you to help others? God made me to help others!

We have the Lord our God to help us.  —2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

In our Bible story, Rebekah looked for ways to help at a well. So, with your family, look for ways to help. On a sheet of paper, have each family member write down a place where they can look for ways to help. And be sure to have each family member write down their name next to the place they write.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, we want to look for ways to help others everywhere we go. Please help us look for ways to help when we are at (read the places your family listed). You are the best helper, God, and we are so thankful we have You to help us. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
