The Four Friends

Mark 2:1-12

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Mark. Mark loved Jesus and told people about Him so that they could know Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”

We begin with four friends who helped. This is the sign for help.

The friends knew someone who needed help. His legs didn’t work, and he couldn’t walk. He needed their help because he had to be carried.

One day, Jesus came to their town! There are so many amazing things to know about Jesus. Jesus is God’s Son. Jesus is an amazing teacher. And Jesus can do things only He can do.

A lot of people were excited and came to see Jesus that day. But they weren’t the only ones excited to see Jesus. When those four friends heard that Jesus was in town, they knew that Jesus could help the man who couldn’t walk. The four friends helped him by picking him up and carrying him to Jesus. It was probably hard work, but the four friends really wanted to help the man.

When they got to the house where Jesus was, the house was full of people. They couldn’t get in the front door.

So, guess what they did? They carried their friend to the roof, the top of the house!

The friends got their friend to the roof, but how did they get their friend inside? They had to dig a hole in the roof.

The friends dug a hole in the roof and lowered their friend to Jesus.

When Jesus saw how much the man and his friends believed that He could help, Jesus did something amazing! Jesus told the man to get up and walk! And he did!

Jesus made the man’s legs all better, he could walk and even dance! That is AMAZING! Because the four friends helped, the man who couldn’t walk got to see Jesus. And Jesus helped him walk! Wow!

The four friends did what God made them to do. They helped, and we can, too! God made you and me to help others. Hooray for helping.

Bible Verse: We have the Lord our God to help us.  2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

Text Truth: God made me to help my friends.

Family Devotional

Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on.
Mark 2:3-4

God made us to help our friends, and that’s what the four friendsone, two, three, fourdid in our Bible story. They helped their friend by carrying him all the way to see Jesus! We were made to help our friends, too.

We have the Lord our God to help us.  —2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

In our Bible story, some men helped their friend. So, with your family, make a list of your friends. Have each member of your family write down the name of a friend. And be sure to write down the name of each family member next to the name of their friend.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for giving us friends. Please help [family member’s name] look for ways [he/she] can help [friend’s name they listed]. Please help [family member’s name] look for ways . . . (Continue with each family member.) We want to help our friends the way You made us to help. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
