Timothy and Tabitha

1 Timothy 4:12; Acts 9:36-39

Our true story comes from a letter that our friend Paul wrote to his young friend Timothy. We can read Paul's letter in the Bible, where it is called First Timothy (1 Timothy). Our true story also comes from a part of the Bible called Acts, which is short for “The Acts of the Apostles.” An apostle is someone who is sent to teach people about Jesus.

Our true story is about a woman named Tabitha. She loved God and followed Jesus! Tabitha was always helping people. One way she helped was by making clothes for people.

Tabitha helped a lot of people by making clothes for them! Hooray for helping!
Yes, God made Tabitha to help. Make the ASL sign for help. With your dominant hand, make a fist with your thumb up. Place that fist on the palm of your other hand and raise both hands together.

Tabitha helped people by making clothes. But there are SO many different ways to help.

There is another true story in the Bible about a young man named Timothy. Timothy didn’t make clothes like Tabitha. Timothy helped by teaching others about God and showing people how to love like Jesus!

God made Timothy to help, and Timothy helped a lot of people, too! Hooray for helping!

Did you know that God made you and me to help, too? That’s right! We were ALL made to help others!

Now, let’s think of different ways we can help others. A lot of us have some crayons at home. How could we use our crayons to help others? We can use crayons to draw a picture to cheer up our friends!

We also have toys at home. How could we use our toys to help others? We can share our toys, and we can help clean up our toys, even if we didn’t make a mess.

What about at the park? Have you ever seen trash on the ground at the park? How we help there? We can pick up trash in the park with our family.

We also have food at home. What can we do with the food we have? We can share our food with people who need it.

There are SO many different ways we can help others! God made you and me to help others! Hooray for helping! Who made you to help others? God made you to help others.

Bible Verse: We have the Lord our God to help us.  2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

Text Truth: God made each of us to help in different ways.

Family Devotional

In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (in Greek her name is Dorcas); she was always doing good and helping the poor. —Acts 9:36

In our Bible story, Tabitha and Timothy helped others, but they did it in different ways. That’s because God made each of us to help others in different ways. And the Bible verse we’re learning teaches us that we have someone very special helping us.

We have the Lord our God to help us.  —2 Chronicles 32:8, NLT

Timothy and Tabitha did what they knew to do to help others. So, with your family, make a list of things you can do. It can be anything! Do you know how to pick up toys, clean a table, give a hug, make a sandwich, draw a picture, or feed a pet? You can do so many things! Have each member of your family write down something. And have each family member write down their name next to the thing they say.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for making (name each family member) to help in different ways. We can do things like (read the list your family made). Help us look for ways to use all of the different things we can do to help others. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
