Peter Goes to the House of Cornelius

 Acts 10

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Acts, which is short for “the Acts of the Apostles.” An apostle is someone who is sent to teach others about Jesus.

We begin with a man named Peter. Peter was a friend of Jesus.

Jesus taught Peter to love everyone the way Jesus loves everyone. So, Peter started telling the good news that Jesus loves everyone and Jesus wants to be everyone’s friend forever!

It doesn’t matter where a person lives, what a person looks like, or what language a person speaks. Jesus loves everyone!

So, that’s what Peter told everyone. Peter told his friends about Jesus.

Peter told his family about Jesus. Then Peter told someone named Cornelius about Jesus, and he wasn’t Peter’s friend or his family.

Cornelius was different from Peter. But Peter chose to love Cornelius and tell him that Jesus loved him, because Jesus loves EVERYONE and Jesus wants to be EVERYONE’S friend forever.

Cornelius was SO excited when he heard about Jesus that he got all of his friends and family to come hear about Jesus, too!

Then they all became friends with Jesus! But wait! There’s more wonderful news to this story. Jesus wants to be OUR friend forever, too! It’s true!

Bible Verse: Jesus said, “Come follow me.”  Matthew 4:19, NCV

Text Truth: I can love everyone the way Jesus loves everyone.

Family Devotional

Cornelius answered: “Three days ago I was in my house praying at this hour, at three in the afternoon. Suddenly a man in shining clothes stood before me and said, ‘Cornelius, God has heard your prayer and remembered your gifts to the poor. Send to Joppa for Simon who is called Peter. He is a guest in the home of Simon the tanner, who lives by the sea.’ So I sent for you immediately, and it was good of you to come. Now we are all here in the presence of God to listen to everything the Lord has commanded you to tell us.” — Acts 10:30-33

In our Bible story, Peter went to Cornelius’ house to tell him the good news about Jesus. Then Cornelius went and got all of his friends and family so they could hear the good news about Jesus, too! And what is the good news? The good news is that Jesus wants to be your friend forever! And the Bible verse we’re learning will help us remember that Jesus wants us to follow Him and be His friend forever.

Jesus said, “Come follow me.”  —Matthew 4:19, NCV

Peter wanted to love everyone the way Jesus loves everyone. So, with your family, get a piece of paper and make a list of people you can love like Jesus. It can be anyone because Jesus loves everyone! Have each family member write down the name of someone. And make sure each family member writes down their name next to the name of the person they say.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to love everyone. Please help (name each family member) and me love everyone the way Jesus loves everyone. Help [family member’s name] love [name they listed] and [family member’s name] love [name they listed] and . . . (continue with each family member and the person they named). We want everyone to hear the good news that Jesus wants to be their friend forever. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
