In the Garden

Genesis 1:31; 2:8–3:24

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Genesis. The word genesis means “the beginning.”

We begin in the VERY beginning when God created the world and everything in it! God made a great big, beautiful world and saw that it was good. God made the water and trees . . .

…beautiful flowers, and lots of plants. Some of these plants even had food on them!

And there were SO many animals!

. . . and animals and people! And the first two people God made were named Adam . . .

. . . and Eve.

God told Adam and Eve to take care of the big, beautiful garden. Everything there was perfect because God made it.

The garden was amazing. It was full of trees with yummy food to eat! God told Adam and Eve that they could eat from ANY tree but one. God said, “Don’t eat from this one.” Well, one day a snake told Eve to EAT the fruit God said NOT to eat. Yes or no—should Eve eat the fruit? Should Eve do what God says? Yes. But guess what? Eve ate the fruit that God said not to eat! Was that the right choice? No!

Then, Eve went to Adam and asked him if he wanted the fruit. Now Adam had the same choice: eat the fruit or do what God says. Should Adam eat the fruit? No. But guess what? He did!

Adam ate the fruit. Adam and Eve both made the wrong choice. And now, they had to leave the garden. Even though they had to leave the garden, God took care of Adam and Eve and gave them what they needed. Did God still love Adam and Eve? Yes! Adam and Eve learned that they should have done what God said because God knows what’s best for them. And guess what? God loves us and God knows what’s best for us, too.

Bible Paraphrase: God . . . knows everything. 1 John 3:20, NIV

Text Truth: God knows what is best for me.

Family Devotional

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
Genesis 1:31

Our Bible story was about how God made everything. And if God made everything, then God knows everything. And if God knows everything, then God knows what’s best for me and you and you and you and you. And Adam and Eve.

When God told Adam and Eve they could eat from every tree in the garden except one, what should they have done? Adam and Eve should have done what God said because God knew what was best for them, but they didn’t. And they had to leave the garden.

The Bible verse we are learning will help us remember that God knows everything. Since God knows everything, God knows what’s best for us!

God . . . knows everything1 John 3:20, NIV

We know that God knows everything because God MADE everything! So, with your family take a piece of paper and make a list of things God made. Have each family member write down one thing God made. And have each family member write their name next to the thing they write down.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, we believe You made the whole world and everything in it. You made things like (read the list your family made.). And because You made everything, You know everything. Because You know everything, You will always know what’s best for me and (say each family member’s name). Help us trust You and do what You say. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
