Land, Plants, and Seas and Sun, Moon, and Stars

Genesis 1:9-19

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Genesis. The word genesis means “the beginning.”

God made the WHOLE world and everything in it.

First, on day one, God made light and dark.

Then on day two, God made a place for the water below . . . and created the sky above.

But do you think God was done? No way! God wanted to make so much more. On day three . . . God made dry ground and called it “land!” Then God put all the water together and called it “seas.” God looked at what He made and saw that it was good.

There was so much land, but there wasn’t anything growing on it, yet. So, God told the land to start growing things!

Trees started to grow right up out of the ground. Vines and bushes and flowers and plants of all kinds sprouted up everywhere.

God even made fruits and vegetables for us to eat. Can you think of a yummy yellow fruit God made? God made bananas for us to eat.

Can you think of a yummy orange vegetable God made? God made carrots for us to eat! God made so many different plants for us to eat and enjoy. God looked at all those wonderful plants and saw they were good!

On day three, God made land, plants, and sea. Now we’ve talked about what God made on days one, two, and three.

What number comes after three? Four. On day four, God made something SO bright and beautiful. God said, “Let there be lights in the sky.” Now, God made one BIG light for the daytime. Do you know what light God made for the daytime? The Sun!

After God put the sun in the sky, God made some special lights for the nighttime. Say it if you know what lights God made for the night! God made the moon and stars for the nighttime. God looked at the sun and moon and stars and saw that they were GOOD.

Now let’s remember what we’ve learned so far. On day one, God made light and dark. Then on day two, God made the amazing sky above the water below. On day three, God made land, plants, and seas. Then on day four, God made the sun, moon, and stars. Only God can do that! God is so creative and powerful. God made everything!

Bible Paraphrase: God saw everything he had made. And it was very good. Genesis 1:31, NIrV

Text Truth: On days three and four, God made the land, plants, and seas and the sun, moon, and stars.

Family Devotional

And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so. God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so. The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth, to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.
—Genesis 1:9-19

In our Bible story, we learned about a lot of the things God made. God made land, plants, and seas on day three, and the sun, moon, and stars on day four. Wow! God made everything!

God saw everything he had made. And it was very good. —Genesis 1:31, NIrV

“Let’s stand up and say that verse together with the motions. Just say what I say and do what I do.

When God made trees and plants, He made some of them grow food like carrots, peas, apples, and bananas. Mmm . . . yummy in my tummy! So, with your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of food that grow on trees and plants. Have each member of your family write down a food that grows on a tree or plant. And make sure that each family member writes their name next to the food they write down.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for making so many trees and plants to grow yummy foods we can eat like . . . (read the list your family made). You are so good, God, and You make very good things. We love You! In Jesus’ name, amen.”
