Light and Dark, Sky Above Water

Genesis 1:3-8

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Genesis. The word genesis means “the beginning.”

In the very beginning, there was nothing. There was no light. There were no houses or people or trees or even dirt for plants to grow in. It was empty. There was nothing. But God was there.

On day one, when God began creating the world, God said, “Let there be light.” And there was light! The WHOLE world was filled with beautiful, dazzling, shimmery light! God looked at all of that amazing light and saw that it was good.

Then, God separated the light from the dark. God called the light “day” and dark “night.” That’s why we have daytime and nighttime!

What’s the very first thing we do in the daytime? We wake up and get ready for an amazing day of work and play.

After a long, full day, what do we do at nighttime? We get sleepy, so God gave us the dark nighttime to sleep and rest. On day one, God made light and dark.

But do you think God was finished? No way! God was just getting started. On day two, God made a place for the deep, cool water below and created the wide, blue sky above the whole world! And the wide blue sky above the whole world.

Let’s review. On day one, God made light . . . and dark. And on day two, God made a place for the water below and the amazing sky above. Wow! Only God can do that. God is SO creative and powerful. God made everything!

Bible Paraphrase: God saw everything he had made. And it was very good. Genesis 1:31, NIrV

Text Truth: On days one and two, God made the light and dark and the sky above the water.

Family Devotional

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.” So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.
—Genesis 1:3-8

Our Bible story was about how God made everything. We learned that God made light AND dark on day one, then God made the sky above the water on day two. Wow! God is amazing!

God saw everything he had made. And it was very good. —Genesis 1:31, NIrV

God made the sky on day two. So, with your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of things you see in the sky. Hmm. What are some things you see way up high in the great big sky? Have each family member write down something they see in the sky. And make sure they write down their name next to the something they say.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, it has been so amazing learning how You made the light AND dark on day one and the sky above the water on day two. Only You can do that! Help us remember that You made the sky every time we look up and see a (read the list your family made) in it. We love You, God! In Jesus’ name, amen.”
