Moses and the Sea

Exodus 13:17-18; 14

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from.

We begin with a man who was pharaoh. Pharaoh was the king of a place called Egypt, and he did very mean things to God’s people, the Israelites. Pharaoh made them do very hard work without paying them for a very, very, VERY long time. And Pharaoh wouldn’t let them leave!

God saw that His people needed help, so God sent a man named Moses to lead them to a better place to live. God used Moses to make Pharaoh let His people go.

So Moses led the people out of Egypt, away from Pharaoh, and into the desert.

While they were in the desert, God told Moses to tell all the people to camp near the Red Sea. The people didn’t understand why God would send them that way. Now they have a choice to make. Will Moses and the Israelites go God’s way or their own way? What should they do? Yes, they went God’s way!

While they were camping, they looked up and saw Pharaoh and his army coming towards them.

Oh, no! What are Moses and God’s people going to do?

Moses told God’s people, “Trust God and don’t be afraid. God knows what is best for us. God will make a way.”

Then God told Moses to stretch out his staff over the sea. So, Moses did what God said, and guess what happened next? The sea parted, and there was a dry path for them to walk on! God made way for His people!

After they walked safely to the other side, God closed the waters. God kept Moses and His people safe from Pharaoh and his army! Isn’t God amazing? Moses and God’s people, the Israelites, trusted that God knew what was best for them. And WE can trust that God knows what’s best for us, too! Tell me, who knows what’s best for you? God knows what’s best for you!

Bible Paraphrase: God . . . knows everything. 1 John 3:20, NIV

Text Truth: I can trust what God says.

Family Devotional

But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left. —Exodus 14:29

What do we swim or take a bath in? Water! And our Bible story had lots of water in it. The water was called the “Red Sea.”

God used Moses to lead God’s people out of Egypt. Moses did what God said, but when they got to the Red Sea, it was so big they couldn’t even swim across it! What did God do to help Moses and His people? God parted the Red Sea and made a dry path for them to walk on. God knew what was best for Moses and His people. And God knows what’s best for you and me, too, because God knows everything!

God . . . knows everything. —1 John 3:20, NIV

We know that what God tells us to do is best because God knows everything. So, with your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of some things God tells us to do. You can use your list when your pray. What are some things God tells you to do? (Help, share, love, pray, forgive, use gentle hands and words, etc.) Have each family member write down a “thing.” And make sure each family member writes their name next to the “thing” they write down.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, We know You love us. A LOT! That’s why we can trust that You always know what’s best for us. You know what’s best for (name each family member). Help us do what You say, like when You tell us to . . . (read the list your family made). We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
