Miriam

Exodus 2:4-10, 15:20-21; Micah 6:4

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from. Our true story also comes from a part of the Bible called Micah. Micah loved God and told people what God wanted them to know.

We begin with a woman named Miriam. The Bible teaches us that Miriam was sent by God to help His people. Miriam knew that God was with her, and that made her strong and courageous so she could do brave things.

When Miriam was a young girl, she had a baby brother named Moses. To keep Moses safe, her mother had to hide him. Miriam’s mother put baby Moses in a basket and placed it in the tall grass by the river.

Then Miriam was brave and stayed to watch over her baby brother. When a princess came to the water and saw Baby Moses, God helped Miriam be brave so she could talk to the princess and help keep her baby brother safe for a long time.

Another time Miriam was brave was when she and her brother, Moses, were grown-ups. Miriam helped Moses lead God’s people, the Israelites. One big job God gave Miriam was to be a prophet. A prophet is someone who delivers messages from God. God helped Miriam be brave and talk to all of those people.

Another way God helped Miriam be brave was when she led God’s people in singing and dancing to praise God. She shook her tambourine and sang, “Sing to the Lord.”

God helped Miriam be brave and led all the people to sing and praise God. That was a brave thing! God helped Miriam do so many brave things! She was strong and courageous. Miriam knew God was with her and that helped her be brave. God can help YOU be brave, too. Who can help you be brave? God can help you be brave!

Bible Paraphrase: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the Lord your God goes with you.” Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

Text Truth: God can help me do brave things.

Family Devotional

Then Miriam the prophet, Aaron’s sister, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women followed her, with timbrels and dancing. Miriam sang to them:

“Sing to the Lord,
    for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver
he has hurled into the sea.”
Exodus 15:20-21

In our Bible story, Miriam was brave and led ALL of God’s people to sing and dance for God, because God is awesome! Do you remember any other brave things Miriam did? Miriam was brave and watched her baby brother, Moses. Miriam was brave and talked to the princess. And Miriam was brave and told God’s people what God wanted them to know.

God helped Miriam do brave things, and God can help us do brave things, too! Who can help you be brave? God can help you be brave!

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the Lord your God goes with you.”
—Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

God helped Miriam do brave things. So, with your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of brave things you can do. Have each family member write down one brave thing. And be sure to have each family member write their name next to their brave thing.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for helping (name each family member) be brave and do brave things like (read the list your family made). Help us remember that we can be strong and courageous. We don’t have to be afraid because You are always with us. You are awesome, God, and we love You very much! In Jesus’ name, amen.”
