Exodus 16

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from.

We begin with some people called the Israelites.

The Israelites were pretty unhappy. They were walking in a desert. Deserts are HOT! There are no trees to sit under in a desert. There’s no cool water to swim in. There are no grocery stores or restaurants for food.

And the Israelites had been walking in a hot desert for a very long time. They walked and they walked and they walked. They were hot. And tired. And they were HUNGRY!

Their tummies were growling. The Israelites were very hungry because they didn’t have any food! God knew that the Israelites needed food.

So, God told their leader Moses that he would send food.

At night, when the moon and stars were in the sky, God sent meat to eat. They had plenty of meat to eat! Everyone was so happy to have food. Thank you, God!

Then, in the morning, when the sun was in the sky, there were small pieces of bread all over the ground for the people to eat!

Again, everyone was SO happy. Thank you, God!

Every day, God made sure the people had meat to eat at night and bread to eat in the morning.

Wow! God is SO good! God gave the Israelites food to eat. We can thank God for our food, too! Thank You, God, for our food. Tell me, who can you thank for everything? Say, “I can thank God for everything!”

Bible Paraphrase: Always give thanks to God. Ephesians —5:20, NIrV

Text Truth: I can thank God for food.

Family Devotional

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions. On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice as much as they gather on the other days.” —Exodus 16:4-5

In our Bible story, God’s people, the Israelites, had been walking in a desert and were so hungry. God knew they needed food. So, God gave the Israelites bread in the morning and meat at night. Yum! The Israelites were so happy to have food to eat! They thanked God for food, and we can thank God for food, too. We can thank God for everything!

Always give thanks to God. Ephesians —5:20, NIrV

Our Bible story was about God giving the Israelites food. So, with your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of your favorite foods! Have each family member write down their favorite food. And make sure they write their name next to their favorite food.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, You are so good! Thank You for creating so many yummy foods to eat like (read the list your family made). I pray You will help (name each family member) and me remember to thank You for our food. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
