Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz

Ruth 1–2

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible Ruth. And that part of the Bible is named after someone in our story.

We begin with a woman named Naomi.

Naomi was sad. She was so sad because her husband and sons had died and she was alone.

So, Naomi decided to go back to the town where she grew up.

But there was Ruth. Ruth was married to Naomi’s son. Ruth said, “I’m your family, Naomi! Wherever you go, I will go. Wherever you live, I will live.” Wow! That’s awesome. That made Naomi feel HAPPY! Naomi was SO happy that she and Ruth were family and that she had someone to walk with her.

So, Naomi and Ruth walked together all the way to the town where Naomi used to live.

When they got to the town where Naomi used to live, Ruth and Naomi took care of each other. They needed food because they were hungry. Ruth and Naomi’s tummies were rumbling because they were hungry. So, Ruth went to look for food to eat.

Not far from where they lived, there was a man named Boaz. Boaz had people working in his fields gathering all the grain. The fields were like BIG gardens. As the workers picked the grain, they would leave some for people who needed food.

When Ruth saw the grain and began to gather it, how do you think that made her feel? Ruth was so happy to have the grain that she began to gather it to take it home for her and Naomi to eat.

While she was out in the field, Boaz saw her collecting food.

When Boaz found out that Naomi was a part of his family, Boaz decided to take care of Ruth and Naomi and make sure they had plenty of food to eat!

Wow! God sent more family to help. When Ruth went home to Naomi with good food to eat, Naomi was so thankful!

God gives us people to call family, and all families can take care of each other. Thank You, God, for giving us family! Tell me, who can you thank for everything? Say, “I can thank God for everything!”

Bible Paraphrase: Always give thanks to God. Ephesians —5:20, NIrV

Text Truth: I can thank God for family.

Family Devotional

Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband—how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”
—Ruth 2:11-12

In our Bible story, we learned about Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz’s family. First, there was Naomi. Then God added Ruth to the family. Then God added Boaz to the family. They helped each other, and Naomi was so thankful. We can thank God for family, too, because we can thank God for everything!

Always give thanks to God. Ephesians —5:20, NIrV

Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz were family. You have people you call family too. So, with your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of the members of your family. Have each family member say their name out loud. And as they do, write down their name.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for giving us people like (read the list of your family members) to call family. Please help us love and take care of our family the way Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz did. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
