Birds and Flowers

Matthew 6:25-34

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew loved Jesus and told people about Him. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word "Gospel" means "good news!"

One day, Jesus sat down on the ground with His disciples and began teaching them important things.

Jesus said, “Look at the birds.”

I love to watch birds in my yard. When I look in my yard, I see blue birds and red birds and black birds! So many beautiful birds! Jesus taught His disciples that God takes care of the birds.

Think about it. Do birds have refrigerators in their trees? No!

And do birds go to the grocery store? No!

And do birds order a kid’s meal in the drive-thru? No!

Jesus taught that God takes care of the birds! They don’t have to plant a garden. God made trees and bushes that give them food.

Next, Jesus told His disciples to look at the flowers.

Flowers are so pretty.

God made flowers with the most beautiful colors.

There are blue and red and yellow and pink and purple and white and orange flowers too!

Jesus asked His disciples, “Do you think these beautiful flowers are worried about what to put on so they will look beautiful?” No! God already made the flowers beautiful!

Jesus taught His disciples that God takes care of the flowers and God takes care of the birds. Jesus told this story to teach us something very important. God loves us more than flowers and birds! And since God takes care of flowers and birds, that means that God will take care of us too!

We don’t need to worry about what we’re going to eat or drink. Just like God takes care of the birds and gives them food to eat, God will take care of us.

We don’t need to worry about the clothes we will wear. Just like God takes care of the flowers and gives them beautiful colors to wear, God will take care of us.

Jesus teaches us that we don’t have to worry. God will take care of us. I’m so glad Jesus teaches us important things. When someone asks you, “Who teaches you important things?” You can say, “Jesus teaches me important things.”

Bible Paraphrase: The people were amazed at his teaching. —Matthew 7:28, NCV

Text Truth: Jesus teaches that God cares for us.

Family Devotional

“Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.”
Matthew 6:26-32

In our Bible Story, Jesus taught us that since God cares about the birds and flowers, then He cares even more about people! That means God cares about you and me! I am amazed when I hear the things Jesus teaches, and so were the people in our Bible story!

The people were amazed at his teaching. —Matthew 7:28, NCV

Jesus teaches us important things—like God cares for us. Who teaches you important things? Jesus teaches me important things! That’s right! And because God cares for us, we don’t have to worry about things like what food we will eat or what clothes we will wear. So, with your family, make a list of your favorite foods. Then you can use your list when you pray. Have each family member write down their favorite food. And make sure that each family member writes down their name next to their favorite food.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for caring so much about us. Jesus teaches us that since You take care of birds and flowers, then You will take care of us, too, because You love people . . . A LOT! Thank You for foods like (read the list your family made). You are so good to not only give us food, but You make it yummy to eat too! You’re the best God, and we love You! In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.”
