The Man with Leprosy

Matthew 8:1-3; Mark 1:40-45

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew loved Jesus and told people about Him. That means Jesus was his teacher. Our true story also comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Mark. Mark loved Jesus and told people about Him. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word “Gospel” means “good news!”

Our true story is about someone who had A LOT of boo-boos. This man was sick with something called leprosy. He had spots all over his body and there were no doctors or medicine that could help him get better. People couldn’t be near the man because he was sick. This man had to live all by himself without any family or friends.

Having all these boo-boos made this man very sad. One day, a very special man came to town. It was Jesus! Jesus is God’s Son, and Jesus can do amazing things.

The sick man knelt in front of Jesus . . . and said that he knew Jesus could make him all better if He wanted to.

And, do you think Jesus helped the man and made him all better? Yes! He did! Jesus reached out and touched the man. At once, the man was all better.

No more boo-boos! They were all gone! He was healed! Hooray!

Wow! Jesus was kind and loving to the man even though nobody else was. Jesus touched the man even though nobody else would. Jesus made the man all better when nobody else could.

And, when we’re sad or sick or tired, we can know that Jesus loves us too. Jesus loves you, and me, and everyone in the world! So, when someone asks you, “Who does Jesus love?” You can say, “Jesus loves everyone!”

Bible Paraphrase: Be kind and loving to each other. —Ephesians 4:32, NCV

Text Truth: Jesus loves everyone.

Family Devotional

When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.
—Matthew 8:1-3

In our Bible Story today, Jesus did something to make a man very, VERY happy! What did Jesus do? Jesus loved the man and made his boo-boos go away! That was a very kind and loving thing Jesus did.

Be kind and loving to each other. —Ephesians 4:32, NCV

In our Bible story, we learned that Jesus loved a man who had boo-boos all over his skin because Jesus loves everyone. Who does Jesus love? Jesus loves everyone! And that means Jesus loves us when we have boo-boos! So, with your family make a list of boo-boos you have had. Take a piece of paper and have each family member write down a boo-boo they have had, or maybe even have right now. And have each family member write their name down next to the boo-boo they write down.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus, to love everyone. Everyone gets sick and has boo-boos, like (read the list your family made), so it’s really great to know that Jesus loves us when we do. Help us to love everyone, like Jesus does. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
