Palm Sunday

Matthew 21:1-11, 15-16

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew was a disciple of Jesus. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word gospel means “good news!”

We begin in the town of Jerusalem when people found out that. . . Jesus was coming!

The people were so excited that Jesus was coming! They might have said to each other, “Jesus is coming!”

The people were so excited and wanted to celebrate and cheer for Jesus because they knew Jesus was special, and they had heard about all the amazing things Jesus had done. The people may have shouted, “Yay, Jesus!”

The whole town lined up on the street to see Jesus. They took their coats off and laid them on the ground to make a special path for Jesus.

And the people held palm branches up high so they could wave them like flags. When they saw Jesus, they wanted to be ready to celebrate and cheer for Jesus. You can pretend, too! Pretend you have a palm branch in your hand. Wave your palm branch and shout, “Hosanna! Hosanna! Yay, Jesus!”

Jesus came into Jerusalem riding a donkey, and the people waved their palm branches and celebrated Jesus. And we can celebrate Jesus today and every day because Jesus wants to be our friend forever. So, when someone asks you, “Who wants to be your friend forever?” You can say, “Jesus wants to be my friend forever!”

Bible Paraphrase: “I have called you friends.” John 15:15, NIV

Text Truth: We can celebrate Jesus.

Family Devotional

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
—Matthew 21:1-11, 15-16

In our Bible Story, lots of people cheered for Jesus when they saw Him coming down the road. What else did the people do? They spread their coats on the road, and they cut tree branches and spread them on the road too. They knew Jesus was special, but they didn’t know the BEST part yet! Jesus was coming because He wanted to be their friend forever! Who wants to be your friend forever? Jesus wants to be my friend forever!

“I have called you friends.” —John 15:15, NIV

With your family, get a piece of paper and make a list of things you love about Jesus. Have each family member write a thing they love about Jesus. You could love that Jesus wants to be your friend forever. Jesus always listens when you pray. Jesus wants to help you. Jesus loves you. Jesus loves EVERYONE! Jesus can do anything! Jesus is God’s Son. Jesus is always with you. Wow! There is so much to love about Jesus!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for giving us Jesus! We love Jesus so much! We love Jesus because (read the list your family made). Please help us to cheer for Jesus every day because Jesus is AMAZING! We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
