Woman at the Well
John 4:1-30
Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus. And the word "Gospel" means "good news!"
We begin with a well. A well is a deep hole in the ground with water in it. A long time ago, people would go to a well to get water because they didn’t have sinks or refrigerators or water bottles. That means, if someone was thirsty, they had to go to a well for water!
And guess who was thirsty in our Bible Story? Jesus! Jesus had been walking a long way and He was tired and thirsty. So, He sat down by a well. While Jesus was sitting at the well, a woman walked up to get water.
Jesus asked the woman, “Will you give me a drink?” (John 4:7, NIV)
The woman was surprised Jesus talked to her. She knew that the people from her town were not friends with the people from His town. So, the woman asked Jesus, “Why are You asking ME for a drink?”
Do you think Jesus wanted to be the woman’s friend, even though she was from a different town? Yes! Jesus wanted to be her friend forever because Jesus wants to be EVERYONE’S friend forever. That means no matter where you live, Jesus wants to be YOUR friend forever too, because Jesus loves everyone. Jesus wants everyone to be on His team!
Now think about it. Do you think a person can be on Jesus’ team if they live somewhere really, really COLD? Yes! A person can be on Jesus’ team if they live somewhere really, really cold!
Do you think a person can be on Jesus’ team if they live somewhere really, really HOT? Yes! A person can be on Jesus’ team if they live somewhere really, really hot!
What about people who live in a tall building? Can they be on Jesus’ team? Yes!
What about people who live in a small building? Can they be on Jesus’ team? Yes! No matter where you live, Jesus loves you, and Jesus wants to be your friend forever. Everyone can be on Jesus’ team!
Now, back to the Bible Story. Do you remember the woman at the well? Jesus told her that He is God’s Son and He wanted to be her friend forever! The woman was so excited, she left her bucket at the well and went and told EVERYONE in town to come see Jesus because she knew Jesus wanted to be their friend forever too!
And that means Jesus wants to be my friend forever and your friend forever and your neighbor’s friend forever . . . Jesus wants to be EVERYONE’S friend forever! So, if someone asks, “Who wants to be your friend forever?” you can say, “Jesus wants to be my friend forever!”
Bible Paraphrase: “I have called you friends.” —John 15:15, NIV

Family Devotional
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”
—John 4:7
In our Bible story, a woman carried a bucket to a well to get water. Who was waiting at the well when she got there? Jesus! Jesus wanted the woman to know that He is God’s Son, and He came to be her friend forever. What did the woman do when she heard the good news about Jesus? She ran and told everyone to come and see Jesus so He could be their friend forever too, because Jesus wants everyone to be His friend forever! And that means YOU! Jesus wants to be YOUR friend forever!
“I have called you friends.” —John 15:15, NIV
Jesus wants to be friends with people everywhere! So, with your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of places. Have each family write down the name of a place. The place can be somewhere close by—like your grandparents’ house or your favorite place to eat—or it can be somewhere far, far away in the world! It can be anywhere because Jesus wants to be friends with people everywhere! Make sure each family member writes their name next to the place they write.
Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to be friends with everyone, everywhere, like the people in/at (read the list your family made). Help us remember that Jesus wants everyone on His team, no matter where they live! We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
