Shine Like the Stars

Philippians 2:14-16

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Letter to the Philippians. A letter is one of the ways people use to share important news.

Our story is about how WE can shine like the stars in the sky. Yes! I can shine like the stars, and YOU can shine like the stars.

The Bible teaches us that when we do what Jesus says, like when we don’t argue or complain, we will shine like stars!

Hmm. . . what does that look like? Well, when your mom asks you to clean up and you do it with a happy heart, without complaining, you shine like the stars!

That’s it! Now when someone asks you to help clean up, you can say with a happy heart, “I can help!” and shine like the stars! Let’s say, “I can help” together.: “I can help!”

Let’s try another one. When your brother or sister asks you to share and you do it with a happy heart and don’t argue, you shine like the stars.

Now when someone asks you to share, you can say with a happy heart, “I can share,” and shine like the stars! Let’s say, “I can share” together: “I can share!”

Let’s do another one! When you let someone go first in line and don’t argue or complain, you shine like the stars!

Now when it’s time to take turns, you can say with a happy heart, “You can go first” and shine like the stars! Let’s say, “You can go first” together: “You can go first!”

Okay, let’s do one more. When it’s snack time and the snack is not your favorite, but you say, “Thank you” and eat it with a happy heart, you shine like the stars.

Yay! Now when someone gives you a snack, no matter what it is, you can say with a happy heart, “Thank you” and shine like the stars! Let’s say, “Thank you” together: “Thank you!”

There are so many ways Jesus teaches us to shine our light. Now sometimes there will be people around you who complain or argue, but YOU can choose to shine your light and do what Jesus says. Then you will shine like the stars in the sky. So, when someone asks you, “Who can do what Jesus says?” You can say, “I can do what Jesus says!”

Bible Paraphrase: “Let your light shine.” —Matthew 5:16, NIV

Text Truth: I shine when I do what Jesus says.

Family Devotional

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.
—Philippians 2:14-16

In our Bible Story, we learned that one way we can shine our light like Jesus says is by not complaining and arguing. When we do things without complaining and arguing, we shine like the . . . do you remember what we shine like? Stars! I have one question for you. Who can do what Jesus says? Say it with me: “I can do what Jesus says!” Yes, you can!

“Let your light shine.” —Matthew 5:16, NIV

With your family, take a piece of paper and make a list. One at a time, ask each family member, “Can you do what Jesus says?” And as they answer, write down their name on the list.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus to teach us how to shine our light. [family member’s name] wants to do what Jesus says. [family member’s name] wants to do what Jesus says. (Continue with each family member.) Please help us do everything without complaining and arguing so we can shine like the stars and people can see that Jesus loves them and wants to be their friend forever, too. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
