Hannah

1 Samuel 1–2

Our story comes from the Bible. It is found in the part of the Bible called 1 Samuel (we say "First Samuel"). It is the first of two books in the Bible named after Samuel.

We begin with a woman named Hannah. Hannah is feeling sad. Hannah was so sad that she cried!

But even though Hannah was so sad, she knew she could pray and talk to God. Hannah could talk to God even when she was crying.

Hannah talked to God about why she was sad. Hannah knew she could pray and talk to God about anything.

Guess how Hannah is feeling now? Yay! Hannah is smiling. She feels happy! Talking to God made Hannah feel so much better! Hannah had joy again because she knew that God loved her and she could pray and talk to God about anything.

God loves you and God loves me. That means we can pray and talk to God about anything, too! You can pray and talk to God when you feel happy, or sad, or frustrated. No matter how you’re feeling, you can talk to God.

When you get a new toy at the store and you feel so excited, you can talk to God.

When you lose your favorite teddy bear and you feel worried, you can talk to God.

When you go someplace new and you feel nervous or afraid, you can talk to God.

You can pray and talk to God anytime, anywhere, and about anything. Because God . . . Loves . . . YOU! So, when anyone asks you, “Who loves you?”, you can say, “God loves me!”

Bible Paraphrase: “I will always love you.” —Jeremiah 31:3, CEV

Text Truth: I can pray to God.

Family Devotional

In her deep anguish Hannah prayed to the Lord, weeping bitterly. And she made a vow, saying, “Lord Almighty, if you will only look on your servant’s misery and remember me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the Lord for all the days of his life, and no razor will ever be used on his head.” —1 Samuel 1:10-11

In our Bible Story, Hannah prayed to God about feeling sad. Hannah’s face wasn’t sad anymore after she prayed to God. We can pray to God about anything, just like Hannah did. We can pray to God when we feel happy. We can pray to God when we feel sad. We can pray to God when we feel afraid. We can pray to God about anything because God loves us. God loves you, and God loves me!

“I will always love you.” —Jeremiah 31:3, CEV

With your family, take a piece of paper and have your family write anything you want, because you can pray to God about anything. Have each family member write anything they want. You are writing anything you want because you can pray to to God about anything!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You that we can pray to You anytime, anywhere, about anything. Today, [family member’s name] wants to pray about (read what they wrote). [family member’s name] wants to pray about (read what they wrote). (Continue with each family member.) You are the best, God, and we love You very much. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
