The Man at the Pool

John 5:1-9

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus. And the word “Gospel” means “good news!”

We begin with Jesus, God’s Son.

One day, Jesus saw a man by a pool of water. This man had been lying on a mat by the pool for a very long time because he could not walk.

The man thought that if he could get into the pool of water, it would make him better.

But this man had no one to help him get into the water.

Jesus knew the man had been sick for a long time, and He loved the man and wanted to help him.

Can you show me your heart hands? Make heart hands like this.

Yes! Jesus loved the man! The man said, “I don’t have anyone to help me.” So, Jesus told him: “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” (John 5:8, NIrV)

And the man did exactly what Jesus said. The man stood up, picked up his mat, and walked!

That is amazing! The man could not walk, and Jesus made him all better so he could walk! Jesus helped the man at the pool because Jesus loves everyone. That means Jesus loves you! Yes, Jesus loves you! And Jesus loves your family. Jesus loves everyone in your town. Jesus loves the people in EVERY town. Jesus loves everyone in the world!

Yes! Jesus loves everyone in the whole world, and we can love everyone too. We can love like Jesus! So, when someone asks you, “Who can love like Jesus?” You can say, “I can love like Jesus!”

Bible Verse: You are the light of the world—Matthew 5:14, NIrV

Text Truth: Jesus is a light for everyone.

Family Devotional

“Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.”
—John 5:7-8

In our Bible Story, we heard how Jesus helped a man by a pool of water. The man could not walk, and Jesus made him walk! Jesus helped the man at the pool because Jesus loves everyone. We can love everyone, too. That’s why when anyone asks you, “Who can love like Jesus?” You can say, “I can love like Jesus!”

You are the light of the world. —Matthew 5:14, NIrV

Wow! We are the light of the world when we love like Jesus! So, with your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of people you can love. Have each family member write down the name of someone they can love. And make sure that they write their own name next to that person’s name.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You that Jesus loves (say each family member’s name). Thank You that Jesus loves (read the list your family made). Thank You that Jesus loves everyone! Help us love like Jesus and love everyone too. Then we can be the light of the world, like Jesus! We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
