Daniel and the Lions

Daniel 6:1-23

Our true story is found in a part of the Bible called Daniel. Daniel was a man that loved God very much and lived in a land called Babylon.

We begin with a man named Daniel.

Daniel loved God and prayed to God three times a day. Can you count to three with me? “One . . . two . . . three!” When Daniel prayed, he went to his room to talk to God.

We can pray and talk to God anywhere. Can you talk to God in your home? Can you talk to God on the playground? Oh, those are great places! We can talk to God anywhere.

Well, Daniel had an important job working for the king. Because Daniel did such a great job, the king wanted to put Daniel in charge of the whole kingdom.

Now this was a good thing for Daniel, but there were other people who worked for the king who did not want Daniel to be in charge.

So, they did something very sneaky. They tricked the king into creating a new law that said no one could pray to God anymore. And if they did, they would be thrown into a den full of LIONS! Oh, no!

What do you think Daniel did?

Daniel did what he had always done. Daniel went to his room and prayed to God and asked for help.

When the people saw Daniel praying to God, they ran and told the king.

Even though the king really liked Daniel, he had to do what the law said.

That meant Daniel was thrown into the lions’ den!

The king told Daniel, “I hope the God you pray to keeps you safe!”

Well, let’s think about it. God was with Daniel at his job, and God was with Daniel when he prayed in his room. So, guess who was with Daniel in the lions’ den? God! God was with Daniel in the lions’ den! Because God was with Daniel, something amazing happened! God sent an angel to close the lions’ mouths! God was with Daniel, and God kept Daniel safe!

The next day, the king ran to see if Daniel was safe. And he was! The king was so happy that God was with Daniel and kept him safe!

God was always with Daniel and God is always with you too! So, since God is always with you, is God with you when you’re eating dinner? Yes! God is always with you.

Is God with you when you go outside? Yes! God is always with you.

Is God with you when you go to sleep at night? Yes! God is always with you.

So, when anyone asks you: “Who is always with you?” You can say, “God is always with me!”

Bible Verse: “God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9, NLT

Text Truth: God is always with me.

Family Devotional

At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den. When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”

Daniel answered, “May the king live forever! My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”
—Daniel 6:1-19-22

In our Bible Story, we learned that God was with Daniel when he prayed. God was with Daniel when he worked for the king. God was even with Daniel when he was with the lions! God was always with Daniel, and God is always with you too! So, when anyone asks you: “Who is always with you?” You can say, “God is always with me!”

“God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9, NLT

Daniel talked to God in his room. So, with your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of places you can talk to God. It can be any place because we can talk to God anywhere! Have each member of your family write down a place they where they can talk to God. And make sure they write their name next to the place they write.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, Daniel loved You and talked to You no matter what. Help us remember that we can talk to You anywhere, like at the (read the list your family made). Thank You for being with Daniel and for always being with (say each family member’s name). We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
