Burning Bush

Exodus 3:1-18, 6:11; Psalm 118:7

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from. Our true story also comes from a part of the Bible called Psalms. The word “psalm” means holy song or special song.

We begin with a man named Moses. Moses was taking care of some animals that say, “Baa! Baa!” What kind of animal was he taking care of? Yes! Sheep!

One day when Moses was taking care of his sheep, he saw a bush that was on fire.

Moses went to look at the bush, and he saw that there was something different about it. It was on fire, but it wasn’t burning up! The leaves were still green. Then, Moses heard God’s voice coming from inside the burning bush. God said: “Moses! Moses!” and Moses said: “Here I am.” (Exodus 3:4 NIV)

God told Moses to go to Egypt and help God’s people, the Israelites. God wanted Moses to tell Pharaoh to let God’s people go and to take the Israelites to a new land.

Wow! Moses wasn’t sure he could do it. Moses didn’t think Pharaoh would listen to him. Pharaoh was the king of Egypt, and he was mean to God’s people.

But God told Moses, “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12 NIV).

Moses said: “But what if God’s people don’t believe me?” God told Moses, “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12 NIV).

Moses could trust God because nothing is too big for God. Nothing is too hard for God! God’s got it! Moses trusted God! And we can, too, because God’s got it. So, when anyone asks you: “Who's got it?”, You can tell them, “God's got it!”

Bible Verse: Trust in the LORD with all your heart. —Proverbs 3:5, NIV

Text Truth: I can trust God.

Family Devotional

But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”

And God said, “I will be with you. And this will be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you will worship God on this mountain.”
— Exodus 3:11-12 NIV

In our Bible Story, God talked to Moses. How did God get Moses to listen to Him? God spoke to Moses through a burning bush! God told Moses to go to Egypt and tell Pharaoh to let God’s people go. Did Moses think he could do what God said? No! But Moses trusted God, because Moses knew God’s got it, and he did what God said. We can trust God, too, because God’s got it!

Trust in the LORD with all your heart. —Proverbs 3:5, NIV

In our Bible Story, God told Moses to do something. Moses did what God told him to do because he trusted God. We can trust God and do what God tells us to do too! So, with your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of things God tells you to do. Have each member of your family write down one thing God tells them to do (suggestions: God tells us to love, share, pray, be kind, tell others about Him, worship Him, tell the truth, etc.). And be sure that your family members write their name next to the thing they write down.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, You know everything, and You love us. That means You always know what’s best for us. Help us trust You and do what You say, like (read the list your family made). We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
