Elijah and the Widow

1 Kings 17:1-16

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called First Kings (1 Kings). It is the first of two books in the Bible that tell us about the kings of Israel.

We begin with a man name Elijah.

Elijah trusted God. He always tried to do what God told him to do. But it hadn’t rained in a really long time and there was no food to eat.

God told Elijah to go to a town and find a woman there who had food for him.

So, Elijah walked to the town.

Elijah walked to town and found the woman. Elijah asked her for a little water and a piece of bread.

But she said: “I only have enough flour and oil to make bread for me and my son, and then I will not have any more.”

Elijah told the woman: “Don’t be afraid. First, make a loaf of bread for me, and then make some for you and your son. Because God said: ‘Your flour and oil will not run out.’”

So, the woman quickly made some bread . . .

. . . and brought it to Elijah. And guess what?

No matter how much flour and oil she used, she still had more! Wow! God’s got it.

Just like God said, Elijah, the woman, and her son had food every day. The flour and oil did not run out because God’s got it. So, when anyone asks you: “Who's got it?”, You can tell them, “God's got it!”

Bible Verse: Trust in the LORD with all your heart. —Proverbs 3:5, NIV

Text Truth: I can trust God no matter what.

Family Devotional

Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the Lord sends rain on the land.’”
—1 Kings 17:13-14

In our Bible Story, Elijah was hungry, and God sent Elijah to find a woman. The woman did not have a lot of flour and oil to make bread. But the woman trusted God and made bread for Elijah, and God made her oil and flour never run out! Wow! God’s got it!

Elijah and the woman trusted God no matter what. We can trust God no matter what too! So, when anyone asks you: “Who's got it?”, You can tell them, “God's got it!”

Trust in the LORD with all your heart. —Proverbs 3:5, NIV

Elijah, the woman, and her son ate bread in our story. So, with your family, make a list of the foods you eat. Have each member of your family write down a food they eat. And make sure they write their name next to the food they write down.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for loving us so much. Thank You for taking care of us and giving us things to eat like (read the list). Help us remember that we can trust You no matter what. Nothing is bigger or more powerful than You! We love You, God! In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
