Jesus Helps Peter's Family
Mark 8:14-15
Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Mark. Mark loved Jesus and told people about Him. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word “Gospel” means “good news!”
One day, Jesus went to the house of His friend Peter.
When Jesus got there, He found out that Peter’s mother-in-law was very sick. She was lying in bed with a fever and didn’t feel well at all.
Jesus cared about her and wanted to help.
He walked over to her, held her hand, and helped her sit up. Right away, the fever left her, and she felt all better! Jesus made her well because He is so kind and powerful.
Do you know what she did next? She got up and started serving Jesus and the others. She was so thankful that Jesus had helped her.
Jesus cares about us and wants to help us. When we feel better or are blessed, we can thank Jesus by helping others.
Dear God,
Thank You for caring about us when we don’t feel well. Thank You for making Peter’s mother-in-law all better and showing Your love and power. Please help us to always thank You and help others like she did. We love You, God.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Bible Verse: The LORD is my helper; I will not be afraid. — Hebrews 13:6, BSB
Paraphrase: God helps me; I’m not afraid.
Activities
These activities will help preschoolers connect with the story of Jesus Healing Peter’s Mother-in-Law, reinforcing the themes of Jesus’ care, thankfulness, and helping others.
1. Caring Hands Craft
Objective: Help children connect with the story by creating a craft that reminds them of Jesus’ loving care.
Materials: Construction paper, crayons, markers, and scissors.
Activity: Have the children trace their hands on construction paper and cut them out (with help if needed). On one hand, write, “Jesus cares for us,” and on the other, “We can help others.” Let them decorate their hands with bright colors and stickers. Talk about how Jesus cared for Peter’s mother-in-law, and she showed thanks by helping others.
2. Musical “Thank You, Jesus” Song
Objective: Teach children to thank Jesus joyfully through music and movement.
Materials: A simple tune (like “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”).
Activity: Sing this short song together:
“Thank You, Jesus, You’re so kind,
You healed a lady who didn’t feel fine.
You care for us and love us, too,
Thank You, Jesus, we love You!”
Encourage the children to clap their hands or play rhythm instruments as they sing. Repeat a few times and let them move to the music to celebrate Jesus’ love.
3. Helping Others Role Play
Objective: Teach children that we can thank Jesus by helping others.
Materials: None.
Activity: Talk about ways to help others (e.g., picking up toys, sharing, giving hugs). Then, let the children act out helping tasks. For example, one child pretends to be Peter’s mother-in-law, and others bring a pretend drink of water or help her up. Discuss how helping others shows our love and thankfulness to Jesus.
4. Jesus Heals Coloring Page
Objective: Reinforce the story visually while discussing Jesus’ care.
Materials: Coloring pages depicting Jesus helping someone, crayons, or markers.
Activity: Provide a coloring page that shows Jesus healing Peter’s mother-in-law or a similar scene. While they color, talk about how Jesus cared for her and made her well. Encourage the children to share their pictures with someone at home to tell the story.
