Noah Builds a Big Boat

Genesis 6:8-9:17

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Genesis. The word genesis means “the beginning.”

A long time ago, there was a man named Noah. Noah loved God and tried to do what was right. But many people around Noah were making bad choices and not listening to God.

God said to Noah, “I am going to send a lot of rain. I want you to build a big boat called an ark.”

So, Noah listened to God. He started building the huge ark, just the way God told him. People laughed at Noah, but Noah kept listening to God.

Then God told Noah to bring animals onto the ark—two of every kind. There were big animals and little animals, birds and crawling animals. Noah obeyed God again and brought them all inside the ark.

When Noah, his family, and the animals were safe inside, God closed the door. Then it started to rain—and rain—and rain!

It rained for forty days and forty nights. The ark floated on top of the water, and everyone inside stayed safe.

When the rain stopped and the land was dry again, Noah and his family came out of the ark. The animals came out too!

Noah thanked God for keeping them safe.

Then God made a beautiful rainbow in the sky. God said, “This rainbow is a sign of My promise. I will never flood the whole earth again.” Whenever we see a rainbow, we can remember that God keeps His promises!

Noah listened to God and did what God said. God kept Noah, his family, and the animals safe during the big rain. God put a rainbow in the sky to show His promise. God loves us and keeps His promises!

Dear God,

Thank You for loving us. Thank You for Noah, who listened and obeyed You. Thank You for keeping Noah, his family, and the animals safe in the big boat. Thank You for the rainbow that reminds us of Your promise. Help us to listen to You and trust You every day. We love You, God.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Bible Verse: “Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9, BSB

Paraphrase: God is always with me.

Activities

These activities help preschoolers engage with the story through movement, crafts, music, and storytelling, making the lesson fun and memorable.

1. Animal Parade Game

Objective: Reinforce the idea of animals entering the ark two by two.

Materials: Toy animals or animal picture cards.

Activity:

Let children choose two of the same kind of toy animal or card.

Have them walk the animals in pairs into a pretend “ark” (a box, blanket fort, or taped-off area).

Say together, “God told Noah to bring two of every kind!”

Discuss how Noah obeyed God, even when it was hard.

2. Rainbow Craft

Objective: Teach that the rainbow is God’s promise.

Materials: Paper plates (cut in half), markers/crayons, tissue paper or colored paper strips in rainbow colors, glue.

Activity:

Let children decorate the paper plate as a rainbow using markers or gluing colored strips.

Write: “God keeps His promises” at the top.

Talk about how the rainbow reminds us of God’s love and faithfulness.

3. "It’s Raining!" Movement Game

Objective: Help children feel the story through movement and rhythm.

Materials: Optional music or sound effects of rain.

Activity:

Have the children pretend to build the ark, using blocks or miming hammering.

Then pretend it’s raining—tap the floor softly, then louder.

Finally, float like the ark by gently swaying side to side.

Finish by stretching arms to the sky to look for the rainbow.

4. Animal Sounds Song (Music Activity)

Objective: Reinforce the animals’ role in the ark through sound and song.

Materials: None, or simple rhythm instruments.

Activity:

Sing a familiar tune (like “Old MacDonald” or “If You’re Happy and You Know It”) with animal verses:

o “If you’re thankful like the cow, say ‘moo moo’…”

o “If you’re thankful like the duck, say ‘quack quack’…”
