The Woman at the Well

John 4:1–30

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus. And the word “Gospel” means “good news!”

One day, Jesus was tired from traveling and sat down beside a well. A well is a deep place in the ground where people get water. A woman came to the well to fill her jar with water.

Jesus surprised her by talking to her. Usually, people did not talk to her or treat her kindly. But Jesus did. He asked her for a drink of water, and then He told her something very special: “I can give you living water.”

The woman was curious. She thought He meant water from the well, but Jesus meant something even better. He meant the love of God that never runs out. Jesus’ living water makes our hearts full of joy, peace, and love.

The woman realized Jesus was not just any man. He was the Savior God had promised! She was so excited that she ran back to town, leaving her jar behind. She told everyone, “Come and see Jesus!”

And many people came to meet Him, because she shared the good news.

Jesus gives living water that never runs out. Jesus loves everyone, and you can tell others about Him too.

Dear God,

Thank You that Jesus talked to the woman at the well. Thank You that He gives us living water—Your love that never runs out. Help me to share about Jesus with my friends, just like the woman did. We love You, God.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Bible Verse: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”  — John 8:12, BSB

Paraphrase: “I am the light of the world.”

Activities

These activities help preschoolers engage with the story through movement, crafts, music, and storytelling, making the lesson fun and memorable.

1. Pouring Water Play

Objective: Help children understand the idea of water that refreshes and never runs out.

Materials: Plastic cups, pitchers of water, trays or towels to catch spills.

Activity Description: Let children pour water from one cup to another. Refill pitchers as needed so they see the water doesn’t “run out” during playtime.

Talk About It: “Jesus gives us living water that never runs out!”

2. Water Well Craft

Objective: Create a simple reminder of the story.

Materials: Paper cups, string, small paper cups or paper “buckets,” crayons.

Activity Description: Use one large cup as the well. Tie a string to a small cup and let children color and decorate it as the “bucket.” They can lower the bucket into the well and pull it back up.

Talk About It: “The woman came to the well for water, but Jesus gave her something even better—living water.”

3. Tell the News

Objective: Encourage children to share good news about Jesus like the woman did.

Materials: None.

Activity Description: Start a whisper game where one child says, “Come and see Jesus!” and whispers it to the next child, until it reaches the end of the circle. Then everyone says it out loud together.

Talk About It: “The woman told her friends about Jesus. We can tell our friends about Him too.”

4. Music Activity: Song – “Jesus Gives Us Living Water” (Tune: Row, Row, Row Your Boat)

Objective: Celebrate that Jesus gives living water through a simple, joyful song.

Materials: None (optional: scarves or blue ribbons to wave like water).

Activity Description: Teach children this song to the tune of Row, Row, Row Your Boat. Encourage them to sway side-to-side like water while singing.

        Jesus gives us living water,
        Flowing every day.
        Never thirsty, always full,
        Jesus shows the way!

Talk About It: “Just like water helps our bodies, Jesus’ living water fills our hearts with God’s love!”
