God Calls Moses

Exodus 3:1-18; Exodus 6:11; Psalm 118:7

Our true Bible story comes from a part, of the Bible called Exodus. The word “exodus” means to leave or go away from. Our true story also comes from a part of the Bible called Psalms. The word psalm means holy song or special song.

A long time ago, a man named Moses lived in a land called Midian. He took care of sheep for his father-in-law, Jethro. Every day, Moses led the sheep to find green grass and cool water. One day, he led them to a mountain called Mount Horeb.

As Moses watched his sheep, he saw something amazing—a bush was on fire, but it didn’t burn up! The flames were bright, but the bush stayed whole. Moses said, “I will go see this strange thing.” When he came closer, he heard a voice calling his name: “Moses! Moses!”

Moses said, “Here I am.” The voice said, “Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, because you are standing on holy ground.” Moses knew it was God speaking to him! God said, “I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

Then God told Moses something very important. He said, “I have seen My people in Egypt. They are being treated badly. I have heard their cries, and I am sending you to help them.”

Moses felt afraid. He asked, “Who am I to do this?” But God said, “I will be with you.” God promised to help Moses and show him what to say. Moses learned that God is powerful, loving, and always near.

Even when Moses felt scared, God helped him be brave. Later, when things were hard, Moses remembered that God was with him—and that made all the difference.
God chose Moses for a special job, and God helps us, too, when we do the things He wants us to do.

God is always with us and helps us be brave. Just like God helped Moses, He helps us when we are scared or unsure. We can trust that God will always take care of us.

Dear God,

Thank You for calling Moses and helping him to be brave. Thank You for showing him that You are always with us, even when we feel scared. Please help us to listen to You, trust You, and do the things You want us to do. Thank You for being our helper and our friend. We love You, God.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Bible Verse: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. — Psalm 119:105, BSB

Paraphrase: God’s Word shows me the way.

Activities

These activities help preschoolers engage with the story through movement, crafts, music, and storytelling, making the lesson fun and memorable.

1. Burning Bush Craft

Objective: To help children visualize how God spoke to Moses in a burning bush that did not burn up.

Materials: Brown construction paper (for the bush), red, orange, and yellow tissue paper (for flames), glue sticks, and crayons.

Activity: Have children draw or glue a “bush” on their paper using brown crayons or paper. Then let them glue small pieces of red, orange, and yellow tissue paper over it to make the fire. Explain that the bush burned brightly, but it didn’t burn away because God was there.

Talk About It: “God talked to Moses from the burning bush. God can talk to us through the Bible and through prayer.”

2. Listening for God

Objective: To teach that we can hear God by listening quietly, just as Moses listened when God called his name.

Materials: A soft bell or small musical chime.

Activity: Invite the children to sit quietly in a circle. Tell them that you’re going to make a small sound, and when they hear it, they should raise their hands. Remind them that Moses had to stop and listen when God called to him from the bush.

Talk About It: “Moses heard God say his name. When we listen quietly, we can hear God in our hearts too.”
3. Follow God’s Directions

Objective: To help children understand that God gives us directions and helps us follow them.

Materials: None required (optional masking tape or paper footprints on the floor).

Activity: Create a simple “path” on the floor with masking tape or paper footprints. Invite children to follow the path as you call out directions like “Take two steps,” “Turn around,” or “Raise your hands.” Tell them that God gave Moses special directions to help His people, and God gives us ways to follow Him too.

Talk About It: “God helped Moses know what to do. When we listen and follow God, He helps us do what’s right.”

4. God Is With Us (Musical Activity)

Objective: To celebrate that God is always with us, just as He was with Moses.

Materials: Rhythm instruments (shakers, bells, or tambourines).

Activity: Teach the children a simple song to the familiar tune of “This Little Light of Mine” (Public Domain):

Song: “God Is Always With Me” (to the tune of “This Little Light of Mine”)

        God is always with me,
        Everywhere I go!
        God is always with me,
        He loves me so!
When I feel scared or small,
I know He hears my call.
God is with me. He loves me so!

Let children sing while playing their rhythm instruments and gently moving or dancing.

Talk About It: “God told Moses, ‘I will be with you.’ God is with us, too, every single day!”
