God Hears Our Prayers
Luke 1:5-25, 39
Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too. And the word gospel means “good news!”
A long time ago, before Jesus was born, there was a kind man named Zechariah and a kind woman named Elizabeth. They loved God very much. They prayed to Him, trusted Him, and tried to do what was right every day.
Zechariah and Elizabeth wanted a baby, but for a long time they did not have one. This made them feel sad sometimes. Even so, they did not stop loving God or praying to Him. They believed that God was listening.
One day, Zechariah went to God’s special house, the Temple, to pray. While he was there, something amazing happened. God sent an angel with an important message. The angel said, “Zechariah, God has heard your prayers. Elizabeth will have a baby boy.”
Zechariah was very surprised. He wondered how this could happen. But God always keeps His promises.
Soon, just as God said, Elizabeth was going to have a baby. Elizabeth felt thankful and happy. She knew God had listened to her prayers and had not forgotten her.
Not long after that, Mary came to visit Elizabeth. When Elizabeth saw Mary, her heart was filled with joy. She knew God was doing something wonderful. God was getting ready to send Jesus to the world!
God heard Zechariah and Elizabeth. God kept His promise. And God was preparing something very special for everyone.
God hears our prayers and keeps His promises. Even when we have to wait, God is listening and doing good things for us.
Dear God,
Thank You for loving us and listening when we talk to You. Thank You for hearing our prayers, just like You heard Zechariah and Elizabeth. Help us remember that You are always listening, even when we have to wait. Help us trust You and know that You keep Your promises. We love You, God.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
Bible Verse: “For nothing will be impossible with God.” — Luke 1:37, BSB
Paraphrase: “Nothing is too hard for God.”
Activities
These activities help preschoolers engage with the story through movement, crafts, music, and storytelling, making the lesson fun and memorable.
1. God Listens Telephone
Objective: To help children understand that God listens when we pray.
Materials: Two paper cups, Optional: string, tape
Activity: Show the children the paper cups and explain that sometimes people use phones to listen to each other. Let children take turns pretending to talk into one cup and listen with the other. Explain that we don’t need a phone to talk to God—He listens all the time. Invite children to whisper a short prayer or a “thank You” to God.
Talk About It: “God listens when we talk to Him. We can talk to God anytime.”
2. Waiting with Trust
Objective: To help children learn that waiting can be hard, but God is always listening.
Materials: A small timer or slow counting, open space to sit together
Activity: Ask the children to sit quietly while you count slowly to ten or wait for a timer to finish. Afterward, talk about how waiting feels. Explain that Zechariah and Elizabeth waited a long time, but God heard them. Remind the children that even when we wait, God is listening.
Talk About It: “Sometimes we have to wait, but God is always listening to us.”
3. “God Hears Our Prayers” Song (Musical Activity)
Objective: To help children remember that God hears prayers and keeps His promises through music and repetition.
Materials: None (optional: gentle clapping or hand motions)
Activity: Teach children the following song using the familiar Frère Jacques melody. Encourage gentle clapping, hands folded for prayer, or pointing upward when singing about God. Sing the song more than once so children can grow comfortable with the words.
Song Lyrics (Public Domain tune)
To the tune of “Are You Sleeping?” / “Frère Jacques”
God hears prayers,
God hears prayers,
Yes, He does,
Yes, He does.
God— keeps His promises,
God— keeps His promises,
God is good,
God is good.
Talk About It: “God listened to Zechariah and Elizabeth. God listens when we pray too. What can we say to God today?”
4. Prayer Hearts Craft
Objective: To help children remember that God hears their prayers.
Materials: Paper hearts (pre-cut or drawn), crayons or markers.
Activity: Give each child a paper heart. Invite them to color it while you talk about prayer. As they color, say that every time they see a heart, they can remember that God loves them and listens to them. If appropriate, help children say a short prayer together.
Talk About It: “God loves us and listens when we pray.”
