Jesus Is Gentle

Mark 5:25-34

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of Mark. Mark loved Jesus and told people about Him. That means Jesus was his teacher. And the word "Gospel" means "good news!"

We begin with a woman. The woman had been sick for a long, long time. She had gone to so many doctors. But no one could heal her. The woman was so so sad.

One day, Jesus came to town. The woman had heard that Jesus could make sick people better. And she thought that maybe, just maybe if she touched His clothes, she would be healed. She didn’t know if she would be able to get to Jesus because there was a crowd of people.

But the woman decided to try. So, she made her way through the crowd of people.

And finally, she was close enough that she could reach out and touch Jesus’ clothes.

And she was healed! She immediately felt better!

But then, Jesus turned around and said, “Who touched my clothes?”

“Uh oh,” the woman thought. “Am I going to be in trouble? I didn’t ask if I could touch His clothes.” So, she went to Jesus and said, “It was me. I touched your clothes.”

What do you think Jesus did? Did Jesus stomp His feet and get mad or use mean words? No way! Jesus was gentle and kind. Jesus loved the woman and told her that she was all better.

Jesus loved the woman by using kind words. That’s how we can love people, too. We can use kind words and be gentle with our friends. We can love like Jesus!

Bible Paraphrase: A friend loves at all times. —Proverbs 17:17, NIV

Text Truth: I can be kind like Jesus.

Family Devotional

At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”

“You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”

But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”
—Mark 5:30-34

In our Bible story, we heard about a woman who was very sick. She believed Jesus was so powerful that just touching His clothes would make her all better. The woman got closer and closer and closer until finally, she touched Jesus’ clothes!

What happened when the woman touched Jesus’ clothes? Jesus’ power made her all better! Was Jesus mad at the woman? No, Jesus wasn’t mad. Jesus loved the woman and was kind and gentle to her.

And because Jesus is kind and gentle, that means we can be kind and gentle, too! We can love like Jesus!

A friend loves at all times. —Proverbs 17:17, NIV

Our Bible story was about how Jesus loved the woman by being kind to her. So, with your family, make a list of ways you can be kind. Have each family member write down one way you can be kind. And be sure to write down each family member’s name next to what they say.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, there is no one more powerful than You. You have the power to help us and always be with us. Please help us be kind and gentle, like Jesus, so we can love like Jesus. Help us do things like . . . (read the list your family made). You’re the best, God, and we love You. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
