King Josiah

2 Chronicles 34

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Second Chronicles (2 Chronicles). The word “chronicle” means “written history.”

We begin with a king. Now, when I think about kings, I think of someone older and wiser, someone who can lead the people!

But this king was young, and his name was King Josiah. He was VERY young when he became king. Can you help me find out how old he was? Let’s count together: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8! King Josiah was eight years old!

Most eight-year-old kids are eating ice cream.

Or, eight-year-olds are building with blocks.

Or, eight-year-olds are kicking a soccer ball.

King Josiah wasn’t eating ice cream, building with blocks, or kicking a soccer ball. Eight-year-old Josiah was KING.

King Josiah loved God. And he wanted to hear from God.

Well, one day some of King Josiah was a little older his workers found something very special! They found a scroll. Scrolls are like books, and the scroll King Josiah’s workers found had God’s words on it! Wow! King Josiah was SO excited!

King Josiah was so excited that he began reading God’s words so he could hear from God. King Josiah wanted to do what God said because he loved God and he knew God loved him.

Then, King Josiah called all the people together, and he read God’s words to everyone. He then promised to obey God’s words with all his heart and soul. And the people promise to obey God’s words, too.

Do you think YOU, as a kid, could also tell others about God’s words? Of course, you can!
There are so many ways to do it. You can tell a friend, “Hey! God loves you!’

Or you can show them, every day. And they’ll see when they watch you. No matter if you’re young or old, you can tell others that God loves them. So, when someone asks you, “Who loves you?” You can say, “God loves me!”

Bible Paraphrase: “I will always love you.” —Jeremiah 31:3, CEV

Text Truth: I can hear from God.

Family Devotional

The king stood by his pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord—to follow the Lord and keep his commands, statutes and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, and to obey the words of the covenant written in this book.

Then he had everyone in Jerusalem and Benjamin pledge themselves to it; the people of Jerusalem did this in accordance with the covenant of God, the God of their ancestors.
—2 Chronicles 34:31-32

In our Bible Story, King Josiah’s workers found a scroll with God’s words on it. King Josiah knew that when we read God’s words, we can hear from God, so he read God’s words and did what they said. We can hear from God when we read the Bible, because the Bible has God’s words in it. God wants us to hear Him because God loves us. So when you hear me ask, “Who loves you?” You can say, “God loves me!”

“I will always love you.” —Jeremiah 31:3, CEV

With your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of people you can hear from, like a teacher, friend, or grandparent. Have each family member write down their person. And make sure each family member writes their name next to the person they write down.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for loving (name each family member). Thank You that we can hear from people like (read the list). Help us remember that we can hear from You too, God. Your words are waiting for us in the Bible! We love You, God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.”
