Jesus Is the Light of the World

John 1:4–5; John 8:12; John 9:5

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called the Gospel of John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus. And the word “Gospel” means “good news!”

Have you ever been in the dark? Maybe you were in your room at night, and it was hard to see. The dark can make us feel a little scared. But what happens when someone turns on a light? Suddenly, you can see everything again, and you don’t feel so afraid.

The Bible tells us that Jesus is like that light. John wrote, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” That means no matter how dark things feel, Jesus’ light always wins.

One day, Jesus told the people, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jesus wanted His friends to know that He helps us find the right way to live. He shows us God’s love and keeps us from being afraid.

Another time, Jesus met a man who could not see. The man was blind. Jesus said, “While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” Then He healed the man so that he could see again! The man was so happy—he had light in his eyes and light in his heart.

Jesus’ light is special. It never goes out. It shines on us when we are happy, when we are sad, and even when we are afraid. And when we follow Jesus, we can shine with His light too—by being kind, loving, and helping others.
.

Jesus is the light of the world—and He wants His light to shine in you!

Jesus is the light of the world. His light helps me not be afraid. His light shows me that God loves me. And I can shine for Jesus too!

Dear God,

Thank You for sending Jesus to be the light of the world. Thank You that His light shines on me when I am happy, when I am sad, and even when I am afraid. Help me to follow Jesus every day and to shine His light by being kind and loving to others. We love You, God.

In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Bible Verse: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”  — John 8:12, BSB

Paraphrase: “I am the light of the world.”

Activities

These activities help preschoolers engage with the story through movement, crafts, music, and storytelling, making the lesson fun and memorable.

1. Flashlight Fun

Objective: Help children understand that Jesus’ light shines in darkness.

Materials: Flashlights (one per child if possible, or one to share).

Activity Description: Dim the lights in the room. Let the children take turns turning on a flashlight. Each time the light shines, say together, “Jesus is the light of the world!” Talk about how light helps us see and makes us feel safe.

Talk About It: “When it’s dark, a light helps us. Jesus’ light helps us every day!”

2. Shining Sun Craft

Objective: Create a bright reminder that Jesus is the light of the world.

Materials: Yellow paper plates or circles, yellow/orange tissue paper, glue sticks, crayons.

Activity Description: Give each child a paper circle to be their “sun.” Let them glue on tissue paper rays or draw rays with crayons. In the middle, write or help them say, “Jesus is my light!”

Talk About It: “The sun shines during the day, but Jesus’ light shines all the time!”

3. Shadow Play

Objective: Show how light makes a difference.

Materials: Lamp or flashlight, wall space.

Activity Description: Shine a light against the wall and let children use their hands to make shadow shapes. Then turn the light off to show that shadows disappear.

Talk About It: “Shadows come and go, but Jesus’ light never goes away!”

4. Music Activity: Song – “Jesus Is the Light” (Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)

Objective: Sing and move to celebrate Jesus as the light of the world.

Materials: None (optional: scarves or paper stars for waving).

Activity Description: Teach the children this short song to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.

        Jesus, Jesus, light so bright,
        Shining in the darkest night.
When I’m scared, You’re always near,
With Your love, I have no fear.
        Jesus, Jesus, light so bright,
Shine in me with love and light.

Encourage the children to wave their scarves or “shine” with their hands while singing. Repeat the song several times so they can learn it.

Talk About It: “Jesus shines His love in us, and we can shine for Him too!”
