Naaman

2 Kings 5:1-14

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Second Kings or 2 Kings. It is the second book in the Bible that tells about the kings of Israel.

We begin with a very important man who led a lot of soldiers! His name was Naaman!

Naaman was sick. He had boo-boos all over his skin, and there was no medicine to make him feel better.

But a girl who worked for Naaman told him that a man named Elisha could help him! Elisha loved God, and he was a prophet, which meant he gave people messages from God.

Elisha heard that Naaman needed help . . . so, Elisha sent a messenger to tell Naaman to go to the water and dip in it seven times.

Naaman had a choice to make. Would he do what God said and dip in the water seven times? Or would he keep looking for another way to get better? What do you think Naaman should do?

Guess what? Naaman didn’t do what God said! He didn’t understand why God would want him to dip in the water seven times!

But Naaman’s workers told him that he should do what God says. So, finally, Naaman decided to trust God and dip in the water seven times. Count with me. One . . .

. . . Two . . .

. . . Three . . .

. . . Four . . .

. . . Five . . .

. . . Six . . .

. . . Seven! And guess what? After dipping in the water seven times, Naaman’s boo-boos were gone!

Naaman was healed, just like God said! Naaman learned in a big way that God knew what was best for him. And we know that, too! We can trust God knows best, even when it’s hard. Because God knows what’s best for you and me. Who knows what’s best for me? God knows what’s best for me!

Bible Paraphrase: God . . . knows everything. 1 John 3:20, NIV

Text Truth: I can trust God knows best even when it is hard.

Family Devotional

So Naaman went with his horses and chariots and stopped at the door of Elisha’s house. 10 Elisha sent a messenger to say to him, “Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your flesh will be restored and you will be cleansed.”
2 Kings 5:9-10

Our Bible story was about a man named Naaman. How many times did God tell Naaman to dip in the water to make his boo-boos go away? Seven! It was hard for Naaman to dip in the water, but Naaman trusted God and did what God said. What happened to Naaman’s boo-boos when he dipped in the water seven times? All of Naaman’s boo-boos went away! Naaman was all better! God knew what was best for Naaman because God knows everything.

God . . . knows everything—1 John 3:20, NIV

In our Bible story, we learned it was hard for Naaman to do the thing that God told him to do. So, with your family, take a piece of paper and make a list of things that are hard to do. Have each family member write down a thing that is hard to do. And be sure to write down the name of each family member next to the hard thing that they write down.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, there are lots of things that are hard to do like (read the list your family made). There will be times when what You say is best for us will be hard, too. But we can always trust You, God. You will always know what’s best for us because You know everything. Help (say each family member’s name) trust that You will always know what’s best for them. We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
