David and Jonathan

1 Samuel 18:1-4

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called Second Samuel (2 Samuel). The man Samuel loved God and told the people what God wanted them to know.

We begin with David. David was a shepherd who took care of sheep.

Then, there was Jonathan. Jonathan was the son of the king and lived in a palace.

David and Jonathan were very good friends. They loved spending time together. They ate together. They walked together. They were good, good friends.

One time, Jonathan was so thankful for his friend, David, that he took off his coat and gave it to him!

Then Jonathan gave David his sword and his bow. He even gave David his belt. Wow! David was so thankful that God gave him Jonathan to be his good friend!

What can WE do to show God we are thankful for? We can share things with them, like our toys.

We can share rides on our scooters.

We can even share food from our garden. We can share things with our friends to show we are thankful.

What else can we do? We can use our mouths to say kind words! We can say things like, "I like your shoes." And, "You are so nice!"

We can use our mouths to say kind things. We can share. What else can we do to show that we are thankful for our friends? We could draw them a picture for their birthday. Or help them clean up. Or give them a fist bump! There are lots of ways we can show God that we are thankful for our friends.

Thank You, God, for our friends! Jonathan and David were thankful for each other. And we can thank God for our friends. We can thank God for everything! Who can you thank for everything?” Say, “I can thank God for everything.”

Family Devotional

And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt.
—1 Samuel 19:3-4

Our Bible story was about two good friends named Jonathan and David. Jonathan and David talked to each other. They encouraged each other. And they helped each other. Jonathan even gave David some of his things because they were such good friends! Jonathan was thankful to have such a good friend.

Always give thanks to God. Ephesians —5:20, NIrV

Jonathan was thankful for his friend David. You can thank God for friends, too. So, with your family, take a piece of paper and write down the names of friends. Have each family member write down the name of one friend. But be sure to write down the name of each family member next to their friend's name.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. In your own words, say, “Dear God, thank You for my family (say each family member’s name). I love going to church with them! Thank You for their friends. (Read the list your family made.) Please help us talk to, cheer for, and help our friends like David and Jonathan did. And most of all, thank You for Jesus who wants to be our friend forever! We love You, God. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
