Jesus Brings Lazarus Back to Life

John 11:1-45

Jesus had three friends that lived in a village called Bethany, near the city of Jerusalem.

The friends were Mary, her sister Martha, and their brother Lazarus. Jesus loved his friends very much.

One day, Jesus and His helpers were staying in a town on the east side of the Jordan River, far away from where His friends lived.

A messenger came to Jesus. A messenger is a person who gives news to people. But this messenger didn’t have good news for Jesus.

“Jesus, your friend Mary sent me with sad news. Lazarus is very sick,” the messenger said.

Jesus loved Lazarus. He felt very sad that Lazarus was so sick. But he stayed in the town for two more days before going to see Lazarus.

When Jesus came near to Bethany, He found that Lazarus had been dead for four days. Mary heard that Jesus was coming. She ran to meet Him. She was crying and said, “Jesus, I wish You had come sooner. But I know you can still help my brother.”

Jesus said, “Do You believe in Me, Martha?”

Martha nodded her head. She said, “Yes, I believe that You are God’s Son.”

Martha went to get Mary. Mary was very sad and began to cry.

When Jesus saw Mary and her other friends crying, it made Him cry, too. He was sad that His friend Lazarus was dead. But Jesus knew something great was going to happen because Jesus can do anything.

Mary and Martha led Jesus to the cave where Lazarus was. Jesus said, “Move the stone away from the font of the cave.”

Martha answered, “But Jesus, Lazarus has been dead for four days.”

Then Jesus said, “Martha, trust Me and you will see something great happen.”

When the people rolled the stone away, Jesus prayed. “Thank You, God, for hearing Me. I want everyone to know I am Your Son.”

Then Jesus said in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” And Lazarus did. Jesus said to Lazarus’s friends, “Take off his bandages.”

Lazarus was alive! Lazarus was well! Jesus had brought Lazarus back to life. Jesus is God’s Son. Jesus can do anything.
