Jesus Gives You the Power to Be Patient

Luke 2:22-39

Our true story comes from a book, or part, of the Bible called Luke. Luke loved Jesus and wanted others to know and love Jesus, too.

Our story is about how Jesus gives us the power to be patient. Patience is being able to wait with a happy heart. Our story begins with a man named Simeon. Simeon loved God, and he knew that God was sending someone very special. I’ll give you a hint about the special person.

God told Simeon that he would get to see this very special person. But Simeon didn’t know when this very special person was going to come. He had to be patient and wait…and wait…and wait…and wait.

Simeon was so patient! He didn’t whine like we do sometimes when we’re waiting. We say things like, “This is taking so long!” or, “When is it going to be over?” But not Simeon. He was patient.

Then, one day, while Simeon was waiting, Mary and Joseph brought baby Jesus to the temple.

Baby Jesus was the special person Simeon had been waiting…and waiting…and waiting…and waiting for!

Baby Jesus came just like God promised! God’s Son, Jesus, was finally here! Jesus had come to be our friend forever! And when Jesus is your friend forever, He gives you the power to be patient and wait with a happy heart. Jesus gives you the power to do everything!

Bible Paraphrase: I can do everything by the power of Christ.  Philippians 4:13, NIrV

Text Truth: Jesus gives you the power to be patience.

Family Devotional

Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. — Luke 2:25-26

Our story was about a man named Simeon. Simeon knew God was sending someone very special and that God was going to let him meet the special person. But first, Simeon would have to be patient and wait with a happy heart...and wait...and wait...and wait...and wait.

But Simeon did meet the special person. The special person was Jesus! Because God loves us so much, He sent His Son, Jesus, to be our friend forever. And because Jesus is alive, when we follow Jesus He gives us the power to be patient and wait with a happy heart. Jesus gives us the power to do everything!

I can do everything by the power of Christ. – Philippians 4:13, NIrV

With your family, make a list of the things you are waiting for. Maybe you have to wait to eat, or you have to wait for a turn to play with a toy. What about waiting to open presents on your birthday? That can be really hard to be patient and wait to do! Whatever you are waiting for, write it on your list.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God for sending Jesus to give you the power to be patient and wait with a happy heart. Read through your list: Ask God to help (name of family member) be patient and have a happy heart when he/she waits for (read thing from your list). Repeat for each family member. Ask God to help you all follow Jesus so you can love others the way Jesus loves you and have the power to be patient. Thank God for Jesus and acknowledge your love for Him.
