Jesus Gives You the Power to Have Self-Control

1 Timothy 4:12

Our true story comes from a book, or part, of the Bible called First Timothy (1 Timothy). We call it "First Timothy" because it is the first of two letters that a man named Paul wrote to his younger friend Timothy.

self-control is when we choose love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, and gentleness even when we don’t feel like it. And when we follow Jesus, Jesus gives us the power to have self-control.

But you can have power! We should never let anyone look down on us just because we’re young. In fact, there was a man named Paul who lived a long, long time ago. He loved Jesus and wanted everyone to know that Jesus is alive and wants to be their friend forever.

One day, Paul wrote a letter to one of his younger friends named Timothy who also loved Jesus. He said, “Hey, Timothy, don’t let anyone look down on you because you’re young.”

Paul knew that when Jesus is your friend, He gives you the power to do everything, no matter how young you are. Jesus gives you the power to have self-control so you can choose love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and faithfulness even when you don’t feel like it.

Let’s play a game. You have a friend over to play outside. You decide to ride scooters. Do you let them ride your old broken scooter or do you show goodness and let them ride your super-cool new scooter? Yes! You let your friend ride your super-cool new scooter, because Jesus gives us the power to show goodness.

Let’s play again. You’re almost done building the tallest block tower of all time and your little brother crawls over and knocks it down! You are so mad! Do you say mean, angry words or do you say gentle forgiving words? What do you do? Yes! You say gentle forgiving words, because Jesus gives us the power to be gentle.

Okay, let’s do one more. You’re doing a puzzle and you’re having trouble getting the last piece to fit. Do you give up and walk away or do you choose to be faithful and stick to it until you get the last piece to fit? What do you do? You are faithful and stick to it, because Jesus gives us the power to be faithful.

God sent Jesus to show us how to have love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. When Jesus is your friend, He gives you the power to do everything!

Family Devotional

Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. — 1 Timothy 4:12

Our Bible story is special because it reminds us that Jesus gives us the power to do everything even when we’re young. A man named Paul wrote a letter to one of his younger friends named Timothy. He said, "Hey, Timothy, don’t let anyone look down on you because you’re young. You can show people how to love each other the way Jesus loves us. Paul knew that when Jesus is your friend, He gives you the power to have self-control so you can choose love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and faithfulness—even when you’re young. Jesus really does give us the power to do everything!

I can do everything by the power of Christ. – Philippians 4:13, NIrV

With your family, write down the names of each family member and their age. The very young can show hold they are with their fingers.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God for giving His Son, Jesus to be your friend forever. Thank God that when you follow Him, Jesus gives you the power to do everything, no matter how young or old you are. Thank God that (say the names of your family members) can have the power to choose love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Acknowledge to God that He is the best! And Acknowledge your love for Him.
