Jesus Gives You the Power to Show Goodness

James 1:17

Our story comes from the Bible. It is found in the book, or part, of the Bible called James. James was the little brother of Jesus.

James tells us that every good and perfect gift comes from God. It’s true! Every good and perfect thing comes from God.


Think about some good things, like a big slice of cold, juicy watermelon, or little puppies that are so cute and cuddly, or splashing in the water at the beach during the hot summer. All those things are good, and if it’s good, it’s from God.


God gave us an amazing world filled with good things for us to enjoy. He could have made it totally boring, with one tree and just a lot of dirt. But He didn’t do that! Out of His goodness He gave us lots of big, beautiful trees and oceans and rainbows and little bunnies and giant elephants and lots of yummy foods! Everywhere we look we find good things. And if it’s good, it’s from God!


Think about all the people who love you: parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, teachers, friends, and coaches. And there’s another very special person God gave us that loves us a lot! Jesus!


God showed His awesome goodness when He gave us His Son, Jesus, to be our friend forever. And when we follow Jesus, He gives us the power to show goodness to others.


What are some ways you can show goodness to others? Well, when your friends come over to play and they want a cookie, instead of giving them just one cookie, you can give them two cookies! That’s showing goodness!


When your little brother or sister wants a toy to play with, you can share your favorite toy. That’s showing goodness!


Or when it’s your grandmother’s birthday, you can draw her the very best picture you ever made. That’s showing goodness!


There are many ways you can show goodness. You can do it because when Jesus is your friend, He gives you the power to show goodness. Jesus gives you the power to do everything!

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. — James 1:17

God could have made just one kind of food, but He didn’t. God made lots of yummy foods! God could have made just one kind of animal, but He didn’t. God made lots of different animals. God could have made just one color, but He didn’t. He made lots of colors!

God's goodness is everywhere! But there is more! God gave us the best gift ever: Jesus! God gave us His Son to be our friend forever. And when Jesus is our friend, He gives us the power to show goodness, too. Jesus gives us the power to do everything!

I can do everything by the power of Christ. – Philippians 4:13, NIrV

With your family, make a list of some of the gifts God has given you. You could say anything His has given: your favorite food, your favorite animal, the stars, a rainbow, snow, the ocean, anything! God has given you so many good gifts!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Acknowledge to God that His goodness is everywhere. Thank God for (read your family's list). Thank God for giving you His Son, Jesus, to be your friend forever. Acknowledge that Jesus is the best gift of God. Ask God to help you all follow Jesus so you can have the power to show goodness to others. Acknowledge your love for God.
