God Helped Gideon Be Brave

Judges 7:9-22

Our true story comes from a part, or book, of the Bible called Judges. A judge is someone who tells people what the law says.

God told a man named Gideon to go and battle a group of people called the Midianites. God's command made Gideon very scared. He was afraid to battle the Midianites because the Midianites had a BIG army. There were SO many Midianite soldiers that you couldn’t even count them all.

But God told Gideon that he would win the battle. Gideon didn’t know how his little army would beat the very big Midianite army, but God knows everything. Gideon knew that if God said he would win, then he would win!

Gideon knew that God would help him be brave. So, Gideon took some trumpets. Then Gideon took some jars and torches. And he gave them to his very small army.

Gideon and his army carefully and quietly snuck down to the Midianite camp at night while they were sleeping. Then they blew their trumpets. They broke their jars so their torches would shine. Then Gideon’s army shouted, "For the Lord and for Gideon."

And just like that, the Midianites ran away. Gideon’s army won the battle just like God said they would! God really does know everything. When He tells you to do something, God will help you be brave enough to do it.

Gideon was brave because God knew everything. And God can help you be brave, too! No matter what, you can be brave when you remember that God knows everything.

Bible Paraphrase: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the LORD your God goes with you. – Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

Text Truth: God knows everything so I can be brave.

Family Devotional

During that night the Lord said to Gideon, "Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands." – Judges 7:9

In our Bible story, our leader's name was Gideon. Gideon was brave and did what God told Him to do because he trusted that God knows everything. And if God knows everything, He will always know what’s best!

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid . . . for the LORD your God goes with you– Deuteronomy 31:6, NIV

With your family, make a list of things you don't know, like how tall you will be or what job you will do when you grow up or what kind of car you will drive. You don’t know any of these things, but there is someone who does: God! God knows everything!

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Acknowledge to God that there are so many things you don't know. You don't know (read through your family's list). Acknowledge that not knowing can sometimes be scary. Ask God to help you remember that He is always with you and He knows everything. And that when you remember that, it will help you be brave. Thank God for loving you the way He does.
