We Can Follow Jesus by Loving Others

John 13:34-35

Our true story comes from a part of the Bible called John. John was one of the friends and helpers of Jesus.

Jesus and His friends were having dinner one night when Jesus said, "I’m going to tell you a brand new rule to follow." Do you want to know what it is?


Jesus said, "The most important thing you can do is to love others the way I have loved you." Wow! Jesus said that if we want to follow Him, the number one thing we can do is to love others!


Let’s practice loving others! Imagine you and a friend are ridding bikes and the friend falls down. What do you do? Do you stop and help? Or do you keep riding? You stop and help! That’s loving others like Jesus!


Imagine your friend is playing in the sandbox with you, but you’ve only got one shovel. Do you keep it for yourself or share it with your friend? Yes, you share! That’s loving like Jesus.


Imagine you find out your older brother accidentally broke your LEGO® creation. Do you stay angry with your brother? Or do you forgive your brother and work together to build a new one? You forgive your brother. That’s right! That’s loving like Jesus. That’s the number one thing you can do!


If you want to follow Jesus, then the most important, number one thing you can do is to LOVE people the way Jesus does. The most important thing is LOVE. So, who can you follow? You can follow Jesus!

Family Devotional

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
– John 13:34-35

Our Bible story was about loving one another the way Jesus loves us. That’s a lot of love, because Jesus loves us A LOT!

When we follow Jesus, we get to see that He loves people by forgiving and sharing and helping and being kind. Jesus loves us by being the best friend ever! That means when we follow Jesus, we can love everyone the way Jesus loves us.

With your family, make a list of ways you can be a good friend and love people the way Jesus loves you. Have each of your family add something to the list.

Pray with your family. Allow any family members to pray if they wish. Thank God for giving you Jesus to be your friend forever. Thank God that He loves you and shows you how to love others. Ask God help you to (read through your family's list) so you can love everyone the way Jesus loves you. Thank God for His love and acknowledge to God your love for him.
